Ok, this is going to sound odd for this forum but how light can I get a short action 700 with say an 18.5" varmint contour barrel and m5 DBM? I picked up a hell of a deal last weekend and am tossing around ideas of what to do with it. With the hs precision stock would it be possible to get a weight under 10lbs if I had the barrel cut and crowned at 18.5"? That is all up weight with sling, optic and loaded 5rd AICS mag. No worry about velocity, my reading tells me accuracy won't suffer and might even improve some... I want to turn it into a do everything rifle that is still very accurate, reliable, weatherproof and not a dog to carry around and shoot offhand.

Thanks for your responses

What does the rig weigh now?
A varmint weight barrel would weigh approximately 1 1/2 ounces per inch at the muzzle end.

I've had several 700s with 20 inch varmint / sendero barrels and H&S stocks and all weighed about 8 lbs. Most were about 9-9.5 lbs scoped depending on the glass. The M5 DBM isn't much of a factor in adding weight to that setup.

I currently have a Rem 700 with a 20" Benchmark med palma barrel (similar weight to Rem Varmint/Sendero) in a MDT HNT 26 folder topped with a Vortex Razor LHT 4.5-22 in a Spuhr hunting unimount. It weighs 10.5lbs with a Harris bipod (1lbs) but no mag. With an even lighter scope and rings, should be easy to stay sub-10lbs with a sling and loaded mag. Can't speak to the HS Precision stock though.
