Last year was very sparse regarding these little forest creatures here in NE Alberta.
Recent early morning range maintenance has myself noticing a few & always different hares feeding around our range gate.

Maybe signs of a better fall and winter season this year?

Any thoughts folks??

Not sure what your previous winter was like but it was quite mild here. This summer has been hot and wet, with a corresponding up surge in grass and plant growth. I'm hoping the bunnies will be plentiful this winter...

how difficult is to hunt bunnies in the summer/fall?

Their brown coat makes finding them a little bit harder in the summer. But I personally find that although one can choose to hunt them all year round in Alberta, they are invariably well infested with ticks & internal parasites in the warmest months. Besides, who really wants to clean a hare at plus 25 celsius, with a big black cloud of skeeters hovering & attracted by their blood?

The most heavily infested with internal critters rarely make it through the coldest winter months.

Holy moly, I've never seen a better rabbit year up here. I have gotten 30 in the last 2 weeks. (all with a Mossberg 12 guage using a 20" barrel and #4 shot. For those wondering)

Yes. I saw about 5 rabbits TOTAL last year, but have seen over a hundred so far this year. I guess the "cycle" of life really does apply to rabbit populations.
BUT, here in the NWT, the rabbit "season" is 365 days a year, same with all small game, so I guess we have the MOST FUN WITH A GUN up here!!!

Alberta has the same 'season & limits' for rabbits only. But being further south we have more insects & parasites busy in the warmest months.
I am fairly certain Manitoba & Saskatchewan enjoy the same north-western freedom as well for rabbits/hares.

Thanks very much for the local news Sgt Rock!

Open season and no limits here in Saskatchewan for bunnies. I don't go in the summer( Fricking ticks!) Fall is for birds and deer. Winter is the best time for me in the rabbit woods.

I haven't been out yet this season, but one report from a very good friend about a very specific area was "millions of them!!!"

I don't know if this is relevant though, because there seems to be a lot of hares where we go. Last year wasn't as great, but I also didn't make as much of an effort...

I've got a long list of other stuff to do before I can get out there for some hares. Got the girls a new rifle for LEH moose and need to work up some loads. Getting my motorcycle licence. The list goes on... But I really do want to take a walk down my favourite summer hare road one of these mornings...

Open 365 days a year in Manitoba! Saw quite a few and had a really good days hunting in South Western MB late last fall, but struck out in the boreal forest areas an hour North of Winnipeg. Seemed like very little sign there.
