All the advice here about calling is good, but you must remember that, if they know you are there, they will NOT come - no matter what sounds you make.

Not always. I have had them come within stone-throwing distance after they have seen me. They can be very curious in response to squeaks.

ive called in mule deer with mine .whitetails no way . they actually get spooked .

I have had whitetails come to both distress calls in the winter and turkey calls in the spring. They're curious animals and it's hilarious when they come in head bobbing trying to figure out what's making the noise.
