Hello All;

I'm heading to a friend's cottage in wmu 55A (just south of Algonquin Park, near Barry's Bay) next week. The rabbit season is open until June 15 there, so I'm definitely planning on doing a lot of hunting while I'm there. I have done a ton of winter season rabbit hunting, but haven't been out at this time of year. Any tips on where to find them? I'll be on a lake, surrounded by mixed bush.

Thanks in advance.

If you can, cut down some fresh boughs from a budding tree. Such as a poplar tree.
Perhaps along the edge of a trail, come back later, especialy near a feeding time, like morning or dusk.
On warmer days they seem to prefer the dark shadowy swamp areas to stay cool.
Be patient, its going to be harder, as they are all cammed up.
Dont forget the binos, really useful for looking into dark corners...

Good luck!

It's hard in bush. Farm land, you'd just cruise the fence rows.
Think what rabbits like to eat, and where they like to hang out.
What do you see in winter? Where are trails heaviest?

I've found them along the edges of fresh stands of poplar, and the fringes of clumps of cedar. They don't like to be far from cover in daylight.

Hi Guys;

Thanks very much for your thoughts and insight. I'm hoping to have some luck but hey, any day walking the bush is a good day.

not to spoil your fun...but some of them are probably raising their young at this time of year....ethics would not allow me to do that to a bunny but a crow thats a different story....2cts

Fratri - You raise a good point - one which I really hadn't thought of. In my excitement about reading in the regs that I "can", I didn't consider whether I "should". In this WMU, the extended season and no possession limit make me think that there is an over-abundance of hoppers, but still ..............

When I used to hunt em years ago in the bush, we would look for brush piles and one guy would jump on the pile, while the other shot the rabbits that were running out from under the brush pile. Lots of fun.

I was just above barries bay last week... There was lots of rabbits right before sunset. There seemed to be a few right on the dirt roads in and out of the cottage. I'm pretty sure the season is still open, casue it extends to the next year in the regulations.

One things for sure in the lake and river infested Algonquin Park, there is NO turkey :(.

I was hunting/camping just north of the park, off the Brain Lake access road and some local moose hunters told me turkeys were beening seen in Phelps township. That is both sides of the highway, about 10 miles from North Bay on the road to T'amang; Songis road and the North River road .

I live 15kms south of Barrys Bay & there are a few turkeys here.
There are lots of turkeys in Orillia area.
So it would not surprise me to hear there were a few turkeys in the Park.

There certainly are lots of rabbits around they seem to be on a high swing of their cycle.

Wrong! I've seen turkey in Algonquin myself. I'm not talking about the tourists either. I've seen them along Hwy 60, and on the road into Kingscote lake.
No season though.

I was in a hilly swampy area, throwing out loctating calls every 10 mins or so. Couldn't hear anything... Probably have to swat them out of the way next time im up after the seasons over :redface:

Last fall hunting in WMU 46 we seemed to come across an unusually high number of rabbits, so it's possible that there would be a reasonable chance of bagging one this spring. I have in years past come across the odd rabbit in the springtime up there during the peak ends of their cycles.
