Since I am not having much luck with the coyotes lately, I figure I give myself a break and try to have some fun by combining a rabbit and coon hunt. :)

This afternoon, I went out to do some bushwhacking. I took along my .22 to hunt some rabbits and raccoons. I did manage to kick up one rabbit but no chance at a shot with the .22 but that's okay just being in the bush is rewarding enough.
I brought along my ecaller so when I came across a raccoon den type of tree, I would try and call out a raccoon. It turns out the only den type of tree I found held two raccoons. First one came out right away and climbed to the top and went into another hole in the tree before I could get around the tree for the shot. 30 seconds later this guy came out and I dropped him before he made it to his buddies location.

The hide was really good, a nice soft full coat of fur. I used a raccoon pup distress call.

If you are looking for a fun way of spending a few hours out in the bush, try raccoon calling. It can be really fun especially if you combine it with a rabbit hunt.

On a side note...... Lots and I mean lots of deer tracks in the cut corn, the deer are digging like crazy looking for those golden nuggets (corn kernels). So if anyone is still looking to fill a tag, find the food and you will find the deer :)

Niiice there are these 3 fat bastard Waschbär ( raccoons ) at work that always are in the rubbish bin making a mess. I am so tempted to take them out one Saturday morning before anyone arrives.. What ammo did you use? What was the range?

The bushes I deer hunt are loaded with coons. I was thinking about getting my dog licensed. Prolly the only English mastiff on record. She stays right with me and will run at anything I point out and tell her to chase.
I'll have to find someone who wants the hides first

Should have smoked the other one out of the tree.Small smudge fire will get them to expose themselves.

back in the day we use to trap the old trash pandas and turn them in to a taxidermy school for kids to practice on. Now I just have a coyote problem and nobody wants them.

If you are close to Oshweken there are people there that will take them. Just dont try to dump garbage or holey pieces on them, take care in how you shoot and handle the hide and you can give them away.

Mojo outdoors did a show on winter coon hunting. Did the same as you, found den trees and used an ecaller. They had great success but they used the raccoon fight sound on their foxpro ecaller. What a sight to see coons come down that tree as fast as they could and run right up to the ecaller looking to join the fight. Makes me wish we had a good coon population here, kind of?! Congrats, that looks like fun!!

Anyone here try eating raccoon? Not the dirty city dwelling ones, I mean the ones living in the country that look like they don't just survive on garbage lol. I was looking through a wild game cookbook I have and there are multiple raccoon, squirrel and possum recipes. The raccoon burgers and raccoon sloppy joe recipes have me interested in trying them out.

If you go out for them in the Hamilton/Burlington/Niagara area you need to take precautions for raccoon rabies. There are still a lot of cases popping up in that general area.

Yes..... they taste very similar to bear..... makes great roast and jerky.....

I've tried many ways even Jerky. I couldn't stand the taste even after a night in milk or boiled they just tasted like a Creek bed. No amount of French's honey mustard could save it. I gave up trying after about 20 of them. I don't run hounds anymore so the only ones I shoot are nuisance ones or angry ones while hunting. I hunt a pine covered ravine and they walk up and growl at me so they catch a broad head. I've always left them to rot. We don't have much for rabies down here but I never risk it. I've had them come right up a tree growling at me
