Raccoons are a terrible nuisance in our neck of the woods. Any tips or tricks to reduce their numbers?

They eventually get wise to dog proof traps as well as live traps.

They don’t get wise if you trap and shoot. I have a local lady with a chicken barn. With one grizz getter (dp trap) I’ve gotten at least thirty coons at her place since mid may.

Can of sardines and antifreeze left out over night. Just make sure you clear it up before you let the dogs out
I generally prefer to shoot them but now that I live in town my mastiff protects my yard. Haven't had one come close to winning thst fight yet

Granular fly bate in the shaker can mixed with Pepsi. About a tablespoon/can , place in an old pan wherever they are causing trouble. They can’t resist and can usually be found within 100ft. Not cat or dog friendly though. Amish recipe from a friend.

Raccoons definitely do get smart to the traps if they have the opportunity to get caught in one more than once! That's the problem with the cash and release crowd: they are just creating new super raccoons that have experienced the traps and therefore know to avoid them.

I had a horrible raccoon problem in my shop, they were just destroying everything. I talked to him more experience Hunter at the start, and he assured me that I definitely had more than one or two raccoon. I got a live trap which I bait with whatever leftovers are in the fridge, and before the problem was resolved I went through over 30 raccoon!

The bottom line is you need to trap them and kill them, there really is no other way.

If you live in one of those pus sy towns where you can't shoot them, there are other ways.
I have never done anything but shoot them, a 22 hollow point shot to the Head is quick and humane. I've heard people recommend dropping the live trap in a barrel of water to drown them, but I've heard many more people report that that is a slow and inhumane death, and I have heard of people being charged by The Humane Society for doing that.
If I wasn't able to shoot, the other method I have heard of is to construct a gas box. Just make a small plywood box just a little bit bigger than your live trap, put a door on one end, and a hose intake on the other end that can connect easily to your car's exhaust. Slide the live trap in, close the door, connected to your car, and run the motor for a little bit. There are plenty of instructions on the internet that tell you how to do this in more detail. I've never done it, but everything I have heard says that it is a nice Humane death for the raccoon, as unlike drowning, they do not sense that there's anything wrong, they just quietly go to sleep and don't wake up.
Good luck, but just be prepared, because odds are you have a more serious raccoon problem than you realize.

Couple beagles, headlamp and .22. Head for a corn field and you could shoot 20 a night when they tree.

I havnt seen that neon colored poison in a long time. Lol

Be very careful, I know a farmer that gave some to his buddy that lived in town. 12 dead coons on his property next morning. Lucky ass hell he noticed and cleaned them up before he was front page of the newspaper 🤣

Well I’m on a farm so I’m allowed to deal with them directly, we don’t like poison because a lot of the time they go to a water source and just makes it more likely for an animal you don’t want poisoned to get sick. Even then I trap them in the barn, take them up to the pond and give them a double barrel salute.

They are a terrible nuisance. One ripped up my attic this spring and had babies up there. I had a hell of a time evicting them. They ripped through the soffits to enter, and ripped through another section to exit. Damaged insulation. Insurance doesn't cover damage done by them. I cut down two nearby trees. I would like to see how they are getting on my roof. I have a trailcam set up.

They crawled into my livestock trailer where I overnight my free range turkeys and ate half a turkey by morning. Walked the outskirts of the yard and there was trails and scat everywhere. Clearly been around awhile.

I had a barrel of leftover popcorn from bear season. Put out a few scoops each evening and put a motion sensor light on it. Aimed the camera on the back of the house on the pile and put it live feed on my phone. Wait for light to go off while watching tv with the wife. Must be over 30 coons later with the 22. If I didn’t have kids buckshot would have been easier, many evenings there was 3-6 coons at once.

I recently found out that in BC, Raccoons are "protected" as are many other annoying wild animals . You can be charged for interfering with them.
Also read the story of the Manitoba woman who was fined and sent to court for harassing a Canada goose she was trying to avoid.

I would relocate up the bush quite a ways from any homes, for now I'm still watching them.
Thanks though
I don't know where you are located, but in many places relocating further than a certain distance, usually 1 km, is illegal.

Partly because it is considered inhumane to relocate a wild animal further than that because you are putting them in a new environment where they have no known shelters or food and water sources, and also may have conflict and competition with other territorial members of their own species, so wild animals relocated too far away often end up dying anyways.
But mostly such rules are usually because of concerns of raccoons being a rabies Vector species.
either way, a lot of jurisdictions prohibit long distance relocation.

Lol, there's got to be something you can do about nuisance raccoons, anywhere.
Who would i call about getting these raccoons trained to respect my property?
