nope , neither one will do a proper job ....too much heat .I figure you're right. With a thin enough object, butane would work, but with the thickness of the receiver, I would likely end up annealing more than I would need to if I used butane.
I'm OK with putting out some cash for oxy/acetylene and a small torch. Another useful skill to learn.
you need either a tig or a wirefeed setup for brass .... even then I highly doubt you have the skill set to properly repair your receiver .
like the others have said , it is a wall hanger now , go find something else to play with .......
another thought just crossed my mind .... you don't like your hands , do you ?
because it appears that you are going to try to remove large chunks of them in the most painful way possible .
