In all my years of hunting, I have never mounted a rack, let alone a full cape mount. My first wife wouldn't allow it, and I didn't really feel the need to hang that stuff up anyway, besides, the real reason I hunted was to eat, not to brag. New wife felt the same, no need to hang that stuff up. Until yesterday, we were at WSS and she see the whitetail rack mount kits there and tells em that she'd like to mount the rack from the buck she killed last week!! Man, talk about a turnaround. Can't mount mine, but can mount hers...Now the race is on for a bigger rack.

I'm a lucky guy...my wife actually likes taxidermy! I've never had a shoulder mount done of a deer, but I have plenty of deer and caribou antlers up around the house and she loves'em. She especially likes Euro (skull) mounts.
A couple of years back I was lucky enough to get a Booner black bear on a Quebec caribou hunt. When I drove home with it she informed me in no uncertain terms that we would be having a full-body mount done, and went with me to the taxidermist to select a pose...despite the fact that we already had a 3/4 bear on the wall in the rec room and a full bear rug in the living room.

My wife didn't care for the mounts at first but for some reason she has taken to them now as well. I had to tell her to slow down when she wanted the moose skull in our bedroom tho.
IMO those plaques at WSS are super cheesey unless they've gotten better ones. Do like the old boys, grab a chunk of wood and start to carving, make a fun project out of it. Finished result is very rewarding. I can post pics of the ones my Gramma's brother made back in the 30's if you like.
I hoard the oak from big heavy pallets at work, a little planing and truing boy they turn out nice. So does the old barn wood, and the grooved wall planks.

I've mounted quite a few for myself and others. I have a method that costs next to nothing and turns out great. Just PM and I'll explain how its done.
All you need is the wood for the plaque, some cloth scraps, styrofoam, and a bit of drywall mud. Go to Value Village and pic up some used trophy plaques for a couple of bucks. The whole project takes a couple of hours of work and costs about $3-$5
