Racoon Problem

Yes they do sell them at Cabelas, but as soon as you buy it and take it home you are breaking the law. You don't even have to use it, just being in possession of it without a trappers license is illegal.
It is not illegal to sell them, but it's illegal to pocess them without being a licenced trapper or a farmer on his own land.

Body-gripping traps

22. (1) A person shall not trap wildlife or a domestic animal by means of a body-gripping trap.

Exceptions

(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a person who uses a body-gripping trap in accordance with the regulations, if,

(a) the person holds a license to trap furbearing mammals and uses the body-gripping trap pursuant to that license;

(b) the person is a farmer or a member of a farmer’s family and uses the body-gripping trap to trap furbearing mammals under subsection 6 (3);

(c) the person is a farmer and uses the body-gripping trap to trap wildlife, other than a bird, under section 31;

(d) the person uses the body-gripping trap in a part of Ontario prescribed by the regulations; or

(e) the body-gripping trap is prescribed by the regulations as a humane trap. 1997, c. 41, s. 22.

Is this an Ontario law or Federal?

Put them in the WITNESS Protection Program....

:confused::confused:

If your going to relocate them do it in a barrel of water while they are still in the trap.

This is the best method - see how long they can hold their breath, or learn to swim, which ever comes first.

But 3 things are of utmost importance:
Secrecy; Shovel; Shutup.....

agreed!!!!

Had one set up residence in my shed one summer. Try as I might I could not make him leave so one day I put a portable bbq in the shed, lit it and put in on low, laid some green watersoaked grass on the grate and closed the lid. A few minutes ;later smoke was pouring out of the opening he was using and seconds later he was coming out too. The little beggar had found a spot he could access by way of hanging upside down and walking the length of the clotheline to the shed. Well he came out eyes watering trying to get away that way and that was where it ended for him. A swift hit with an axe to the noggin took care of the problem.

Another time a buddy of mine had one with little ones tore open some facia and get into his sunroom roof. We caught her in a live trap twice, first time she got out and got away. Next time she spent her final moment in there when he smoked her with a 22 ceebee round. They are so quiet the neighbors cant hear you fire them. Excellent round for city coons.

Well if you live in the county like I do, relocating is not an option as you would be going non-stop 24/7. If I happen to see a bear passing by my place, I don't go out and go rambo on it... I sit back hava a java and enjoy the view. If he comes back and causes trouble or becomes a threat to me or my neighbors, well @ that point it's time to take action, such as call DNR for the placement of a live trap for the purposes of relocating the bear to no mans land... If it were to show agression towards anyone around my place, and danger was imminent, then I'm sorry to say that i would be forced to kill the animal, and I have been forced to do this very thing... It's not like we here are out to torture critters, It's just that racoons especially, will plant their flag on your premesis and wreak havoc on your property, and they can be quite violent if you happen to come face to face with one off guard... When I have had to take care of such things as racoons, it's not like I stand there grinning like Hannibal Lecter. I realize that we humans are ever so more, encrouching on wild animals natural habitat. This is why I do my best to keep my premesis and outter woods clear of anything that attracts the wildlife, or can accomodate them for nesting. But unfortuneatly, sometimes it's just not enough.
Thanks or that, it's nice to hear a reply like that. I think to many people around here get off on killing, I find it a little alarming.

Didn't they say Toronto (and surrounding GTA) has become the Racoon capital of the world having more racoons per sq KM than anywhere else? I guess that's why they filmed Resident Evil in the GTA 'cause it is indeed Racoon City! Ironic eh?

With the population at such high levels with the potential for rabies outbreaks and other fun stuff, you'd think that the city would allow them to be humanely dispatched vs relocation?

Look at that Asian guy who made the news last June because he was trying to eradicate a couple racoons and all the tree huggers came out to protest.

I've had racoons on my roof two years ago, tearing up the shingles and a few years before that, they managed to get into my garage and make a nest in the crawl space, scratch up the car with their paws climbing about and shat on it too. Had to call pest control which cost a pretty penny and roofing company which cost me another $400. Would have cost me less than a buck for a few well placed .22LR rounds.

Pest control folks in the GTA must be having good profits the past 5yrs or so.

I used to operate a small buiseness doing just this... capture and relocation of raccoons and skunks.

The easiest way for you to get rid of your tennants on your own and rapidly (and cheaply) is to go buy these items :

Liquid amonia (sold as floor cleaner)... take the nasty smelling stuff ...NOT spring freshness.
Rags that hold lots of liquid
rope
1 broom handle.

then do this :

tie a rope to a corner of a rag
imbibe it with amonia
using broom handle, push the rag as far the burrow, entrance as possible, make sure rope sticks out (like a tampon)
do this to every access point around the shed

Every 2 days (if warm dry weather...everyday), pull on the ropes, re-soak raggs a,d stuff them back under the shed.

This fould the air in the burrow (kinda smokin' them out) and animal(s) will flee/relocate themselves. One way to see if animals are still around is to lightly stuff entrances with dead leaves...if entrance is disturbed, you still havve tennants.

ok, but what to do when shedd is critter free ?

Get wire mesh (1" welded squares...NOT chicken wire). 2 feet wide by as long as you'll need to go around the sides of the shed. This is a bit labour intensive BUT YOU'LL NEVER EVER GET CRITTERS UNDER THERE AGAIN.

Dig a trench 1 fooot down from the shed wall and 1 foot out...all around. Using a forens, wood slat etc... secure the mesh... it must go down from the wall and, at bottom of trench, skirt outward. Done ? ok, fill everythingh back in with CLEAN earth and sand...no big rocks.

The reason is that a critter coming back will try (try) to dig under the mesh to get back in... it'll go down, down, hit the skirt and waste nighttime...never finding the hedge. If you put big rocks or bricks, you'll simply guide the critter right to the hedge.

not protecting the shed will mean new tennants for sure.

Capture and relocation is a rapid fix but you displace the problem. and as I said, the presence of the critters are a symptom...the shed's accessibility is the problem

If you go for livetrapping...best raccoon bait is sardines in oil. Carefull... a trap baited with this will also catch a skunk... and you need to be polite with those ;).
Hope this helps
pm me if you need more info.

Yann

Awesome! I'll keep this in mind next time I have issues with racoons! Thanks!

yup, sardines will do it alright. You will be surprised what is in there in the morning. Best plan is to place a small tarp over the trap to start with so you dont get sprayed.

Another method is to put out fly bait & pepsi......raccoons are usually about 10 feet away in the morning..............not recommended if there are cats etc around.....then you need a shovel again....

Best to pick up the dish of "pepsi" every morning first thing before anyone sees it, and best is to put it out right at dusk for the same reason

Guy's, If you live in the city, please don't go the poison route. For one it is illegal, & also it kills indiscriminately and in a very painful manner! Cats are particularly vulnerable to poison. The live trap method is the best IMHO. To avoid catching skunks, put the trap up on top of something like an patio table. Raccoons are climbers, skunks are not. Plan to dispose of the coon, not relocate it to be someone else's problem. As others have said, car exhaust works humanely.

I know farmers that would likely treat anyone relocating racoons anywhere near their property as the real source of the problem. :shotgun: :runaway:
Even compared to coyote, racoons seem to be more of a problem, or at least a different type of problem. Along with not being able to plant sweet corn anymore the combine can't harvest the cow corn stalks that are laying on the ground after the racoons pull them over to get the corn cobs. Whole areas are destroyed. Another problem they have that I would never have thought of is they crap all over the hay in the barn. They can't sell these spoiled bails. If you plan on driving out to a farming area to "humanly release" reconsider and think of the farmers and the scale of the raccoon problem they have to deal with.

BTW looking for permission to hunt? I only know about their raccoon problems because on some of the farms where we have permission the farmer has asked us to "please comeback at night" to help him out. We aren't going to be doing this however, this may be a good angle for someone trying to get permission for other types of hunting, get your rim fire and your light and go to it!

I agree! An old girl friends family owns 220+ acres and the little sister had
20+ chickens and sold eggs and it was very profitable I might add. The raccoons were taking 1-2 a week for about a month. Until they trapped and I discarged with a .22lr. Damn those things are fierce! I hated picking up the cages and transporting it to a good spot on the farm to get rid of them. Your picking up 30lb mammal in a 12 lb cage and the things hissing trying to bite, it stinks, I was glad to get rid of them! I made sure to wear nice thick work gloves while picking up that cage! They would just put a dog bowl with dog food in a dish inside the cage, and if there were any left overs after dinner it would go in the dish too.

fly bait and coke will kill them within 10 ft of drinking that stuff. They like the sweet taste from the coke, the fly bait kills them. Put the dish right under the deck were they are, Make sure no dog or cat can get in there at it.

There must be a lot more coons and skunks this year. I shoot at least one coon a week during the day hanging around the house, see tons of dead skunks and coons on the road as well.

I believe fly bait is a restricted product. You need a Growers Safety Pesticide number to be able to purchase it.

2X that. Like Murphy's Law, guaranteed the critter(s) is going to die under the far corner of your porch or shed and not two blocks away. In this weather you'll have that lovely smell permeating through the neighbourhood for days and days until it rots down.

Get some lime, it comes in 30 pound bags, kills the smell of dead animals quite nicely. That way if they die under your shed, shovel it in on top of them.

Cruel, inhumane and dangerous if your neighbourhood has alot of free range pets, but a nice cool bowl of antifreeze will git er done everytime. Just try to make sure its the older stuff as they passed a law requiring a "bitterness chemical" to be added
