Racoons SW Ont population spike?

We had a huge racoon problem in our neighborhood. Community trapping solved the problem (no discharge laws lol ) . I was pleased to discover that all the hype on the Internet about how smart they are and hard to trap is not true. Catching coons was as easy as catching rock bass on a rocky shoal with a worm in the 70's. We used marshmallows as bait to avoid catching the neighborhood riff raff cats and squirrels.

They can't resist mini marshmallows..:)

Will have to try marshmallows, bacon grease is my #1 bait , switch it out with day old cinnamon donuts or peanut butter. One particular trap with bacon grease I pulled out 4 adults in under a day. Today's the first morning it didn't seem like Christmas in a couple weeks, traps were all empty at home area. Total in the past two-ish weeks at home is just over 30, I think 32 or 33 lost track, with surrounding guys reporting another 20ish. Seems that spending a few grand on repairs and digging a few 5 gallon pails of racoon crap out of equipment can have an effect.

Im actually seeing a lot less in my neck of the woods. I've usually shot a couple off the compost by this time of year and im just not seeing them. Makes my 17hmr sad.......

Ive ran over close to 20 this season. Seeing alot more day time activity and litters of 5 or 6 in the bush while turkey hunting. Found alot of dead ones in the bush to
The 401 is littered with them between london and windsor

There's a so called spike in the population every year in May/June which is really just females putting on the feed bag because they're either pregnant or lactating. You see them quite a bit during the day at this time too and they're constantly eating.

Necro thread bump. FWIW.

2019 has been much quieter, same aggressive stance on the raccoon population and YTD near the normal take of about 10 - 15 is my current guess. Last year 2018 in total on the same area we took about 200 +/- by best estimates as we simply stopped counting. So far only minor damage to some equipment, such as chewing or nesting problems.

Live trap, 22 hollow point between the eyes and bury them in your tomato garden. Best tomatoes ever. They are not vegetarians and can climb trees. They are raiding birds nests and have ruined grouse and hare populations on my property. Nasty critters that stupid city slickers love. I am at war with them.

Fly bait in Coco Cola but let it near any pets!

You forgot the most important part....DONT lol

this will kill any coon within 15ft of eatting it. The fly bait kills them, Coke is for the sweet taste.

Cats, dogs, anything. I've seen 10+ coons dead at one time, you do this in town then you will be on front page of the local newspaper lol
