Rain gear choices?

In the military some guys would buy Gore Tex steal suits, usually $50 for a jacket and another $50 for pants and wear them under our combat uniforms. Extremely breathable, waterproof, and quiet as the name implies, it's simply a Gore Tex layer.

Here is a link to what I'm talking about:

I didn't really like the new CF issued Gore Tex gear because I found myself over heating too much in it. Otherwise the US Army surplus Gore Tex gear is also good and very cheap.

I don't recommend Gore Tex for cold weather however as the material is too breathable and you will get cold.

I was very impressed with ArcTeryx LEAF. I picked up a pair of pants and jacket at DS Tactical and went walking the trails at Golden Ears Park. It poured and I was perfectly dry, my friends were definitely soaked.

The one thing you need to be aware of with impertech is that moisture will wick upwards from the waist and sleeves. The lining is quite absorbent. It doesn’t happen quickly but eventually it does happen. I work in fisheries and wear it in the field and it’s great but this does happen and it gets worse over time. Fine at work because I just buy new stuff but if I had to pay....

Mind you it will probably take years if you don’t wear it a lot.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by this. Are you saying that over time, with wear and tear, it will start wicking? Or are you saying it'll wick from day one, it just wicks slowly?

sorry to threadjack a bit...but on the same vein in regards to where to find rain gear for the fat man? like most overweight people, exertion makes me sweat quickly and profusely, so anything that is very to extremely breathable is preferred. and for the type of rain? I'm in Prince Rupert...so it rains from all 4 directions simultaneously. I want/need to get into a semblance of shape and would love to join my wife on her walks. :)

Maybe not from day one but not long after. More quickly in heavy weather. Starts with damp belly and arms then creeps from there.

If I was a bigger fella I’d probably look for a rain poncho of some kind, and a pair of good rain bibs. Larger sizes shouldn’t be to hard to find I’d think, I always find the med/large sizes to be the hardest to find. Lots of small and x-large on the racks when I go clothes shopping.

One thing that causes major issues for a friend is the fact that larger sizes tend to get longer as they get wider. Great if you're 6'4" and large in general, but when you're 5'9" and fat....

I could see that being a problem actually, I run into that all the time when buying pants. I’m average height and finding the right inseam length is a pain, I usually end up with the next longer length and either deal with it depending on the cut of the pant or have it hemmed shorter.

I'm just shy 6ft with a 28" inseam...but my wife, who's 5'5" has an inseam that's an inch longer than mine! I joke I buy shorts for pants...or buy pants and cut them off at the knees.
