I am thinking of joining a hunt group going here this year for deer. Has anyone hunted this area before? Also what is it like for partidge hunting?

Never hunted there. But I have fished for walleye. Very nice spot. I hear the deer hunting there is good. Can't see why it wouldn't be good for ditch chickens either! Don't pass up on a trip like that. You will regret it if you do!

Dave.

I grew up about an hour east of Rainy River.

Step 1: Make sure you realize exactly where Rainy River is, and how long it will take you to get there.

Deer should be good in the area. Partridge depends. My understanding is that the numbers have been down the last several years, with a slight improvement this year (all hearsay, I hunted about 6 hours east this year).

Hunted many times in WMU 10 near hwy 600 / 619..about 40 min from Rainy River.......
It's a 21 hour drive from TO ( change drivers every tank of gas )...including border crossing time of about 30 min in Port Huron and International falls ( Fort Frances )
If you go up through Michigan/MInnesota you'll need a form 6 and a US hunting licence...if you stay in Canada to do the trip add about 3-4 hrs to the trip..the interstate has a speedlimit of 70 in michigan...and is multi lane...the Canadaian version is 2 lane in alot of places...and its easy to get stuck behind a truck for miles amd miles....
You'll fill your tag for sure.....very little hunting pressure...look at the MNR stats on the antlerless and get a rough idea of how many people are in the area.......
The CN Hotel and Legion are about the only night life in Rainy....
I saw no game birds at all during my stay's there...Deer, Bear, Wolf, Coyote, Pine Martin...etc...

I've hunted north of there near Bergland for 15 years now, only 7 hr drive from here in Marathon, some "white chickens" (ruffed grouse). However be aware there are the true prarie chickens as well. They roost in trees and scare the crap out of you when they flush. 12 gauge, full choke and 4's or 6's .

Lots of deer, WMU 7B has archery, primitive weapons, and regular gun seasons. WMU 10 has archery and regular gun, no muzzleloader.

Also watch for elk. They have reintroduced there and you have to watch for them.

I remember reading something about not needing a form 6 or a US hunting license if you are not "staying" in the US (ie entering Port Huron and driving directly out of the US via International falls.. No overnighters, no venturing off the main road, etc.).

I'll be darned if I can find it.
Does anyone remember reading that too?

Now, just why would the folks at US customs believe that you are "just passing thru" ?

Yup. From the ATF website
http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/form6updatesfaqs.htm

38. Q. I'm Canadian and am going to be driving through the United States as a short cut to get from one part of Canada to another part of Canada. I'm going to have a rifle with me. What documentation will I need at U.S. Customs?

A. You do not need a Form 6 import permit from ATF because you are not temporarily bringing your gun in for hunting or other lawful sporting purposes. You also do not need a DSP-61 import license from the State Department, because there is an exception to their license requirement that applies in this situation. However, you do need to have a valid hunting license from a State within the United States to make your possession of firearm legal while you are in the United States.

Now that said, personally, I would take the time to get a form 6 rather than hope that the border agent knew about this and risk leaving your gun or spending hours talking to the powers that be.

Brad.

Make sure your group has good access because the land is all private and the locals don't appreciate trespassers . I hunt Blue township just north of Sleeman but we have a lot of family property up there .

Thanks for the info, But I have decided to bow out of the trip and let the guys have a all male deer hunt this year, but I am sure he will read all your feedback. I am going to go to my usual haunt.... less driving!
