my 10 year old son wants to learn how to shoot olympic trap/skeet----

He is an absolute beginner, I want to help him start right from day one with a professional coach, the right gun.......

please advise of coaches in the toronto/gta area who would specialize in these 2 disciplines

Thank you

I think he's may have to "choose" one or the other discipline first.

Don Kwasnycia / Skeet or George Leary / Trap, are both former International
shooters in the GTA ... you should be able to contact either through Uxbridge
Shooting Sports Club ( International Skeet Field layout ) or Toronto International Trap & Skeet (International Bunker Trap layout ).

" Want " is one thing ... is he physically capable of holding up and controlling a shotgun at his present age ? The International forms of Trap & Skeet are by far, much more difficult than the North American versions... i.e., ATA Trap / NSSA Skeet. Perhaps as a first step, he might want to try learning to shoot first, then becoming at least proficient at one of those before jumping both feet first into the next and most difficult level of the sport.

So many good points here. I don't want to sound discouraging, but it takes so much more than just WANT. Before you put the money into equipment and coaching, there are a lot of American trap and skeet clubs where you can go and start with just some basic instruction. Become proficient at these games and if your son is still interested, start with the coaching, gear and moving to the international games.

Brad.

At 10 he can at least get a paper route and start paying for shells or saving up for a gun.

Putting some responsibility on his part might make him take it a bit more seriously vs just a flavor of the month.

all points are valid and well taken--thank you---

the main reason for me to start him off with a coach is to learn it right from day one---- even if it is just learning the basic's of shotgun shooting, ..........

Your son will be much better off trying American skeet first and trap as well. no child is going to have any fun trying to get on to the speed of International targets, unless he is already 5' 10" tall and handles an over and under better than any child in North America. FS

point accepted--

and yes, he will start off with skeet and trap and lets see how he does---

I am very keen on making sure he learns proper gun control, head placement, focus on target from day one----

thank you and your advice is well taken

what gun would you suggest for him in terms of gauge and action (pls dont say perazzi)--- he is 10 yrs old next month---5 feet 1 inch tall-----126 pounds---

i was reading bob brister " the art and science of shotgunning" and he suggests starting off with a bb gun ( sights removed)

Sounds like he's a big boy!

I applaude your judgement in finding him a coach.

Give Florin a call (2009 ATA Canadian Coach of the Year) at www.learntrapshooting.ca. I have personally trained under him and was a supporter of the school this last trap season. I have seen with my own eyes a 10 year old student of Florin's break 25 straight... some shooters take years to achieve. This 10 year old also shoots registered 100 target events regularly with very consistant scores. Oh, he shoots a 12 guage semi... I think its a Remington.

A high percentage of students coming out of learntrapshooting.ca win events in competitions just months after taking up shooting with no prior experience.

If you son has expressed an interest take him. Don't worry about what gun to buy him, Florin has loners. This is the only sport in the world where a 10 year old and a 90 year old can participate together in competition on the same squad. It needs more youth as the average age of the sport is + 60 years.

I have a son turning 10 in a month. I take him out to HGC regularly, he is not ready mentally yet, but phisically he can mount my trap gun. I did get him a BB gun to familiarize him with, safety, mounting, triger pull, and tracing hand thrown targets. He now shoots a hand thrown hub-cap. So if your son hasn't really mounted a gun, its a good and cheap way to introduce him.

Regardless, contact Florin, he is a really good coach with a perfect personality for it too. He has the credentials and the cetifications to back him.

Hope this helps.

Tough call on the gun Paul. I'd leave that to the instuctor? I started our guys both off with a 20 gauge, but neither of my guys took to shotgun sports. Center fire, different story. FS

Theres a young gun at the club and he shoots a 12g Rem 1100. And does just fine. He shot his first 25 not too long ago and he's 10. Learntrapshooting.ca is a great program. Edit. I just read the post above sorry for a short repeat. Florins great.

I cannot thank you all enough

The young lad has ambition and I, want to support that....thank you for the info...i will try and speak to florins tomorrow or wednesday-----

any recommendations for skeet coaches

Florin also teaches Skeet, Olympic, Doubles.... everything in one place.

I hope to see you and your son at the range one day. Tell Florin Dan sent you.

If you would like to talk in person, just send me a PM.

Hi all,

We're back after taking a few days off after Thanksgiving - Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Age is not a factor in itself - the boy need to be mature enough to listen and follow instructions and strong enough to hold the gun for a few seconds at a time. Most 10 year olds are ready. Regarding the gun, there is no need to purchase one at this time -let's see how the young lad likes the sport and we'll take it from there.

I can be reached at the coordinates below.
Florin

P.S. Thanks for the nice words everyone - a small correction is necessary: at LearnTrapshooting.ca we train / coach ATA as well as Olympic Trap, but no skeet. Although both sports share the same fundamentals, for best skeet instruction I would contact an experienced skeet coach, see the suggestions above.

We cut down a 410 pump to start our kids on. Pattern board first then picked up clay targets to prop in trees, they like to see them break. Straight aways on the trap field standing up close to the house to try the moving targets. Safety and baby steps as far as how much to shoot are the key,you do not want to push them to hard. Just have fun ask around and see if any one has a youth gun you could try.
