Despite the fact that SRD saw their budget cut by 4 million dollars for 2010, RAMP remains a high-priority funding item this year. They are looking at the 2009 season as a successful one and are pleased with the satisfaction that hunters expressed on the survey forms. It sounds as though they will get out and do habitat evaluations on the RAMP properties in 2010 as well.

Here's the latest fact sheets on RAMP

Sorry to read this. Couple months ago I emailed my local mla(who hunts), and expressed my concerns with this whole idea. The impression I got was our current elected representatives all think this is the best thing since sliced bread.

Enjoy your hunting boys, cause if this continues to it's inevitable conclusion it's gonna be cheaper to go and hunt in the states than 1/2 mi. from your house. I've also been hearing rumours about changes to our priority system...which in my mind is currently as fair as it get's, is the envy of other province hunters, and needs absolutely no "improvement".

Then again, how long till the next election?

Yup, SRD is proposing a cap of 6 priority points.

What they're not considering: (for example)
My son's ppcli. He's currently able to hunt: moose, cyp. elk, antelope(our premo-wait for draws) Assuming of course he can ever actually get leave during the season; and know he's getting the leave early enough to apply.

They change this and cap it at 6, it becomes a bs lottery again, and instead of being able to plan a hunt 2 yrs in advance, you're screwed...effectively NO more hunting for AB servicemen.

Just like the old days before the draw priority system....maybe that's the real reason, the "old boys club members" miss getting "drawn" every friggin' year, while everyone else never get's a tag.

6 is a damn insult. Lot's of draws require priority 8 or even 10.

Unless, of course, you're able to buy a tag from a ramp friendly lease holder???
And if by chance that's the Real direction this is going, if srd thinks I'm going to supply the vaseline, they can (pick your own metaphor).
I'll hunt turkey in bc, wt in sask, antelope in mt, and moose in mb., and post my damn land.
Yes, I'm pissed! I lived through the "old boy's club "draw"" days. Only an out of touch government can screw up a good thing.

Definitely worth passing along your displeasure to these two gentlemen....

If it goes to paid hunting here, and landowners start selling tags and/or charging huge dollars for access, our provincial government better hire ALOT more F&W Officers. They will have thier hands full. Just sayin.....

I don't think what the government is doing has much to do with that at this time but what they are doing is bad enough in my mind. No need for "what ifs". "What is" is bad enough.

i know so little about it, I shouldn't even respond, but...

How many hunters are in support of it?

and are the the main players elected officials.

Basically, does the anyone stand to lose their position/job/posting at the hands of disgruntled hunters?

If not, the outcome in inevitible.

No way to tell what the support really is but Alberta's largest hunting and fishing group denounced it.

With the diversion of cash from important programs to RAMP, the time has never been better to make people accountable. I doubt anyone stands to immediately lose a job but votes could be on the line. It needs to become mainstream news. Not much in life is inevitible! Life can take strange turns!

Why I am not seeing any coverage outside of the hunting community?

What should I do?

I wrote a letter, am mailing it tomorrow to both the persons who's address sheep supplied, concerning both ramp, and the change to htg draws. Our draw system is perfect now. As with ramp, they're going to screw things up for everyone.

I also emailed the info to everyone I know who hunts and requested they fwd the info/addresses to everyone They know who hunts in Ab.

Figure I'll give it a week after I mailed them, then I'll do the same to all AB newspapers as letters to the editor. Maybe enough of us do that the media will notice. After all, this is AB. even some of the newspaper people hunt.

A good start would be to contact your MLA and the Premier and tell him how disgusted you are that money is being diverted from critical F&W programs to RAMP. Of course letting the opposition know never hurts and if you have any friends in the media looking for a story, this would make a dandy.

Our draw system is perfect now.

As some of you know I am originally from BC, and I can honestly say that the AB draw system is infinitely better then the BC system. However, saying it is perfect might be a stretch.

What SRD is trying to address is the fact that there are a small number of hunts that are statistically IMPOSSIBLE to be drawn in unless you started applying 10 YEARS ago; these draws are mostly Bighorn Sheep, but there are a few Moose draws in the south that fall into this category as well. In other words I, as a newer Albertan, as well as young and new hunters will NEVER, EVER have the chance to participate in these hunts. Many are asking if that is fair. What do you think?

Now, I think that SRD was smoking crack when they proposed a 6 year cap on all hunts, that is plain friggin' stupid.

My opinion is that the proposed (and supported) AFGA resolution was on the money; the idea that a portion of the tags in draws that are statistically impossible for a new hunter to be drawn in their lifetime should be set aside for "random draw" (i.e. any priority level could be successful).

I know some individuals with a very high draw priority will feel they are being screwed over, but there has to be some fairness in the system for others as well.

draw

What exactly is a six point cap - does that mean if you are not lucky enough to be drawn in that timeframe your priority is snuffed back to zero? If it does then heads should be rolling before this gets underway.

It means the highest priority you could ever attain is six points. Then you'd sit there until everyone else caught up. Basically it's a random draw for everyone with six points. The government gets to steal your draw money for six years before allowing you the privilage of applying in a totally random lottery.
