RAMP high priority

What they're not considering: (for example)
My son's ppcli. He's currently able to hunt: moose, cyp. elk, antelope(our premo-wait for draws) Assuming of course he can ever actually get leave during the season; and know he's getting the leave early enough to apply.

They change this and cap it at 6, it becomes a bs lottery again, and instead of being able to plan a hunt 2 yrs in advance, you're screwed...effectively NO more hunting for AB servicemen.

Just like the old days before the draw priority system....maybe that's the real reason, the "old boys club members" miss getting "drawn" every friggin' year, while everyone else never get's a tag.

6 is a damn insult. Lot's of draws require priority 8 or even 10.

Unless, of course, you're able to buy a tag from a ramp friendly lease holder???
And if by chance that's the Real direction this is going, if srd thinks I'm going to supply the vaseline, they can (pick your own metaphor).
I'll hunt turkey in bc, wt in sask, antelope in mt, and moose in mb., and post my damn land.
Yes, I'm pissed! I lived through the "old boy's club "draw"" days. Only an out of touch government can screw up a good thing.

dont count on hunting w.t. in sask if you are not a resident in 2011,will be draw only for out of province, ltd tags for every zone, grant

Don't get me wrong.

Its all bad, but before we start the wailing and gnashing of teeth, don't forget there is an absolute pile of public land in this province. It aint over by a long shot. It really bites if you are a southern AB elk hunter or a urban guy with few rural ties.

Everyone should be sending a letter to the aforementioned, but keep it in perspective.

I get a little disappointed with some of the 'sky is falling' and you'll have to be a millionaire to hunt" threads that start to pile up on topics surrounding paid access and RAMP.

Let me ask you this. If your business had been in the red for the past 7 years, and you had nearly burned up all of your equity just trying to keep going...wouldn't you be trying create as many alternate revenue flows as possible? Now I'm not naive enough to believe that it is a bunch of hard luck ranchers down south that need paid access to make ends meet. Some are likely very established and wealthy families. That said there are an equal amount that may be looking at this as another way to keep the family on the farm. Whether it will or not remains to be seen and the real tragedy is the government playing both groups off each other when they should be finding a way to provide some sort of program that protects the Alberta cow outfits from the wild fluctations in the cattle market.

It is no secret that in many states, access for hunting is one of the major revenue generators for a number of farm/ranching outfits. So what are we going to fight for? For the right to hunt on someone elses land without paying him? Think about it. How does that look when a guy rolls in in his 2009 pick up truck, $2000.00 rifle and asks for access with no intention of paying (now I know we are not all that guy)? The rancher you're asking may be worrying about making the next bank payment, college tuition, or buying enough diesel to put one more crop of silage in. Things are tough all over.

So to recap. I don't like it. I will write a letter. I will not vote for Stelmach and his conservatives. I will burn my PC card. Not because of RAMP, or the draw system, but because they have dithered and dawdled for the past 2 years and allowed everything in this Province to go to the dogs.

Here's why I'm gnashing my teeth, which I don't normally do:
This is all to placate a small group, in a small zone, who in no means have ever been close to the red. Thirty yrs ago I was flying charter out of Leth., flying some of the concerned around, and they were talking about it then.
Now looking at the ramp map sheep posted, it's spread all the way to Edmonton.
Now extend it to leasholders.
There goes your queensland access.

Add to that the priority 6 cap. With everything from Ed. S. expensive, every hunter in AB will be applying further N., which would mean getting a tag up N. turns into a lottery in 4 years. You may think few are willing to drive, well it's already happening. Lot's of zones that used to be sure things are ever increasing in priority already, and between native and not native hunters most have plenty of pressure to anything that is remotely accessible.

You may think I'm off base here, but imagine how many community pasture's are eyeing ramp and jingling their coins in anticipation? All businesses in AB have been suffering of late. Making money off of a public asset like wildlife on public land is incredibly insulting to me. We all already spend gobs of money to the province on tags, draws, and not to mention all the money we circulate in the general economy due to hunting. Check out hunting in europe to see the long term results of ramp. Ain't nobody selling 12000.00 shotguns in Ab, but they're commonplace in europe.

Yes, all the draws within close driving distance of Calgary have gone through the roof. You can also buy an over the counter tag for sheep, and elk is a general tag in 402/305, and others. Your odds may be slim, but at least you have the chance to try.
If you want to hunt moose there are currently lot's of zones where priority is less. All the historic draw results are available online(my wild alberta), and if you do your homework you at this time can not only hunt almost whatever you want every year, you can use the draw results to plan and accurately know what you'll be drawn for every year for the next 4 years.
That's why I think our system is as close to perfect as we can expect. You want to hunt an hour from a large city, you'll have to wait your turn. Don't want to wait; drive 5 or 6 hrs and you can hunt this fall.
Right now you have a choice.
If all this goes through even remotely close to what I fear, you won't.
This isn't about our hunting opportunities, it's about the right of our future grandkids to hunt in Alberta.
