Hey all
I'm just getting ready to try ramshot big game for my 9.3x62.
Was going to start at 61 gr and work up with a 285gr partition.
Got my first powder charge in the case and wow even 61 gr gets to the bottom of the neck. Seated the bullet and this is definitely a compressed charge. Now my question is how people are loading 64 or 65 gr charges of this powder? Is it OK to compress this much?
Any experience loading this powder for this cartridge would be great help

I load for 9.3x62 but haven't tried the Ramshot. Load Data the online reloading site says 66.0 grains with a COL of 3.370. I am with you though and am leery of compressed charges, even though they are shown in the reloading books like Noslers. I would load a little lighter and look for pressure signs first.
 
Indeed I might, or I'll just go back to my varget loads. I get great consistency with varget and no compressed powder.
I was just looking for more velocity that's the reason for trying big game
 
I've used Varget, 4064 and Reloader 15 and all have worked well for me. If you don't have the Nosler manual, for the 286 partition it says The Varget most accurate load is 53.5 gr for 2269 fps (96% case load) the 4064 50.0 gr for 2157 fps (91% case load) and Reloader 15 58.5 (max) for 2414 fps (101% case load, so slightly compressed). Good luck, I love my 9.3x62, great rifle to shoot.
 
I load mine up with 58gr varget under a woodleigh 286gr. No pressure signs. Getting about 2380 fps I was just hoping for a bit more speed. I'm really wanting to get this big game powder figured out
 
John Barsness is first guy I read to have published loads with Big Game in 9.3x62. In Norma cases, with CCI 200 primers, he goes with 66.0 grains with 286 Nosler Partitions at 2475 fps for less than 1" @ 100 yards. Those loads were tested at Western Powder lab at just under 60,000 psi (30-06 SAAMI pressure). He shows 64.0 grains with 286 Barnes TSX for 2442 fps. He shoots a CZ550. I did not know then what primers he used , but in 2012, with 286 PPU bullets and PPU brass I went up to 65.0 grains with Federal 215 and was just over 2,500 fps when my Shooting Chrony decided to have a conniption. Absolutely no pressure signs in my Husqvarna (FN Commercial 98). I was just over 2,400 fps at 62.0 grains - a project to get back to once I replace the chronograph.
 
i have big game powder, a 9.3x62 but i nver tried it so far as i had good result with varget. you better to choose very well your bullet if you are exceeding 2400fps ....
 
Try pouring the powder in slower or use a drop tube. Sometimes tapping the base on a table or something vibrating ie a tumbler helps settle the powder.
 
I shoot the 286gr woodleigh weld core so no problem them holding together. Also loading the 286gr ppu bullets.
I have heard people shooting much larger and tougher than we have here with that bullet.
I might try a drop tube or something. Or like you suggest resting the shell on my tumbler to vibrate the powder down.

A vibratory tumbler works for that although I haven't used Big Game powder so I don't know how much it will help. I have the tumbler running with the lid on and just hold the base of the filled case on the lid for a few seconds. It reduces the volume a noticeable amount with stick powders, less with flake and ball powders.

both varieties of 4895 are capable of getting over 2400 fps with the 286gr bullet.

the woodleigh choice make a lot of good sense ...
 
The woodleigh and ppu both with 63 gr of big game are getting 2450 fps out of my 23.5" barrel rifles. Both are nearly the same POI out to 200 yards. Prvi bullet for deer, elk or moose and the woodleigh for camp defense or T Rex.
I ordered a box of lapua mega projectiles, they are nearly identical to the ppu bullet. From what I hear the mega should be able to handle anything we have in North America. A bit too stout for deer or meat saver shots on bigger stuff though.
But makes the perfect combination along with the ppu bullet
