After having the Ranch Hand for a week, finally got to take it out for a test drive. Tried it with some 200 gr hard cast and 300 gr XTP loads. As others have posted it shoots quite high. The action is smooth as silk, no problems with either ammo. When I ordered it from Prophet I asked Clay to do a function test before they sent it. Waiting for the Precision stock and Skinner peep/ghost ring. Gonna be a great camp gun.

They are quick to reply! I was told they are doing a run of these stocks in the next couple weeks and...
we can ship up to $400 on a basic Customs Form, so shipping a set of stocks is no problem at all. We ship via USPS First Class Mail International Parcel.

Was just checking with them too. Nice that they warned me about the butt plate.

"We have sold a number of Rossi 92 carbine buttstocks and forearms to Canadian customers for use on the Ranch Hand model. They work without any problems, although fitting and finishing are required, as for all the stocks we manufacture. Rossi carbine buttplates are different in contour and width from original Winchester carbine buttplates, and we are told by customers that Rossi no longer sells buttplates alone. If you cannot locate an original Rossi buttplate, our reproduced WInchester carbine buttplates will work, but do require some additional fitting, as well as slight narrowing by filing or grinding the edges. Of course, that necessitates smoothing up the edges and touching up the bluing."

Good to know. I'd probably just cut the stock like a typical late model winchester and use a modern pad. I'm not that fond of the rossi crescent.

Email confirmation from Precision, stock shipped yesterday, see how long it takes to arrive. Skinner sight also confirmed shipped. Have to see LOP on the stock. Seems the saddle ring carbine was a little shorter, might have to mod. In some cases shorter is better. I can fab my own butt plate from brass or steel. Not enough recoil to need a padded one.

Precision stock has arrived. Just slipped it in place, fit is good , a little final fitting is required, no problem. Butt is crescent with a tab on top, have to source some brass or form one from 1/8 " steel. Leaning towards brass. Makes the gun 29" long. One handy little 44 mag carbine for camp or truck.

I think I'll order one in the new year. Like I said.....I wouldn't bother with the crescent metal just trim it back a bit and put a regular rubber pad on there. Better balance, plenty long for shooting and I prefer rubber to metal because it doesn't slide around so much against the shoulder or on the ground when you lean the rifle up against something......
What was the final damage?

That cut would take 1.5 inches off the length. Maybe a thick rubber pad. Lop now is 12.5, 1/2 or 3/4 inch pad, a couple of possibilities. Sounds like a good idea, cushion for the nasty recoil LOL

A small sized slip on limbsaver or pachmyer would be pretty simple and you could leave some of the top cutout if you wanted because the flange on the pad would cover it. I've got some slip ones that I use on a short stock because the rifle is scoped and I need a bit more length to get the eye relief correct. I just wrapped electrical tape around it to secure it and keep the dirt out.
I find for scopes the length of pull is more important but when I'm shooting red dots or irons it's not such a big deal and squaring up my stance to the target usually takes care of it.

Just looked at WSS site, they have a rather large selection. Don't think I would use a slip on, just because. I'm waiting for the Skinner rear sight, with the arperture removed it is a ghost ring. Shouldering the gun with the longer stock makes the original sights useable, even with bi-focals.

Your best bet is to try some pads in person because you will likely have to grind it to fit. Some pads grind better then others. I'm not sure how the Remington R3 pads grind but they seem pretty nice for the price! Limbsaver also has life size printable pages of their different pads that you can download, print out and then compare to the size of your stock.

Depends how they are packaged, could take the stock down for a trial fit. WSS is just across town. Have a Rigid oscillating belt / spindle sander, works pretty good for shaping. I'll use the mill to do the tang fitting, careful set up and it should work.

Fit the stock to-day. Pretty close just the way it came, just a little work and sanding to fit contours. Colour match is not right on but it's a working gun not a show piece. Only took about hour and half. Pic is a dark, I'll try for a daylight one for better colour. Happy Happy Happy!!!!!!!!!!!
