Ranch predator gun suggestions

I'm trying to get my wife to shoot with a scope, it's going to be an interesting event but we will both be better because of it. She wants to come deer hunting with me, even applied for draws but I told her she has to use a scoped rifle. She has yet to start practicing, and if she doesn't..... I'll leave her home with the coyotes and a scoped .22-250!

It doesn't meet the range criteria for this one, but my girlfriend is really comfy shooting a 19" barreled M1 Carbine. Doesn't kick hard, carries easy and she shoots it pretty well.

I don't see the big push for a scope. A lot of very good accurate shooting can be done with iron sights. Particularly peep sights. I've regularly shot targets to 500m and more with good peep sights.

That said some sort of aimpoint or holo sight might be something to try for 200y coyotes.

Harder against coyote sized animals in field conditions with irons and unknown distance tho

I would try and find something in a .243.

Just as an example, my Savage 12fv (I know its too heavy of a barrel but stay with me) will shoot a 65 grain Vmax with only am inch or so of drop at 200m. For a coyote, I'm "hold on" out to 300.

If you can find something that fits the rest of your criteria, the .243 might be the best choice, especially for iron sites. Then theres no "okay he's 250 out and I gotta aim at the back."

I like the Stevens idea with some aftermarket sites.

There is lots of regular .223 T3's around with sights. Its also the only one that has sights and a DM.

Epps has 8 of them. http://www.ellwoodepps.com/new_firearms_tikka.asp

The battue does not come in .223 or .22-250.;)

Thanks for clearing that up. I have never seen a Tikka with sights and the battue is the only model shown with them on the Tikka site. Looking closer I did notice that sights are an option on blued models. Scopes are so dominate here it seems no dealers bring in the iron sighted models.
You are also correct on the battue not being available in the .22 cals.

Remington model 7 in 223 is what I bought for my wife for her hunting/shooting purposes. Fits her very well and is light enough to carry easily. No detach though. The T3's are light, excellent shooting rifles as well. A blr lightweight in 22-250 or 243 might be a nice way to go as well. Take her to a store and let her handle some rifles, see what she likes.

...She wants an easy-to-carry non-scoped centerfire rifle for predator control out to 250 Meters....She is looking for a light (<7 pounds), open-sight rifle, preferably with a detachable magazine. 223 or 204 would be an optimal caliber and I think semi-auto would be ideal...

I doubt you'll find a semi-auto with sufficient accuracy without going to one of the fancy AR15-type rifles, which will run you well over $1,000.

There is an SPS varmint .204 for $500 in the EE of Precision and Target Rifles which might do the trick. You'd need to have decent sights installed, of course. (This would likely apply to any rifle, even those like the Brno/CZ which have open sights as they are pretty basic. A good aperture sight would be better and possibly a fibre optic front sight.)

There is also a Swedish GC-63 for about $600. The latter is maybe overkill for coyotes and heavier than your wife wants but it comes with excellent Elit diopter sights.

CZ 527 in 223 or 7.62x39, look at the little carbine or the fullstock they are both handy and light with open sights and detach mags.

look for a Tikka T3 in 260 REMington or 6.5x55. With 97 grn bullets over 3000fps, they are effective on coyotes, even in a wind right out to 400 meters.
Recoil is non existant or totally handleable by most ladies standards.

Obtunded, A semi with iron sights won't be a good yote rifle for your wife unless most of the shots will be under 80 meters. And stay away from the mini-14. I had 2 of them over the years and they're not that accurate after the barrel gets warm. Set your wife up with a heavy barrel 22-250 or a 243 with a good 12x power scope, and a bi-pod. Then get her a varmit caller. Pick a good location on your land where she can call the yotes in. It's the only way to deal with the problem.

Wait for a Rem 600 carbine in 6mm Rem. I have had two in my life and they really work well and have a bit of charisma as well. My wife loves it and it makes a good deer rifle as well.

I'm quite surprised nobody mentioned the AR180B...

If you are in no rush (they can be hard to find) HK did make the 630 and SL6 in .223

But if she's open to the idea of carrying a bolt action rifle... theCZ Carbine would get my vote!
