I'm long overdue for a quality set of shooting glasses. I'm looking at Randolph Ranger Edge or Ranger Classic style.

For those who have them, what are your favourite lense colours? There are almost too many choices.

And PS, when looking at the cable style frame ends, what the heck does the 150mm vs 160mm measurement mean? I can't find an explanation of that anywhere on the Randolph website.

I have the tangerine and vermilion. I tend to wear the tangerine most. Its been so long since I first acquired them but I think mine are 168mm? I have the Edge series. The optician I purchased mine from charged me $490 tax in with the two sets of prescription lenses.

If you want the ORANGE ( as in clay targets ) to stand out, get the dark PURPLE. I mean the Orange REALLY jumps out. Also, if you're hunting and you want to tone down the GREEN (trees) and make animal colours stand out, also get the PURPLE. The yellow is good for darker/overcast days BUT it can also be hard on the eyes if it's a bright day. For black targets, the yellow is good, as is vermillion. Again, yellow is hard on the eyes if the sun is out.

I use yellow for cloudy days, orange or purple for bight days. As an aside, if anyone is looking for prescription Randolph's, Wayne Morgan at Morgan Optical is great to deal with. I went with my prescription in a set of light yellow and then clip on orange and purple (non prescription) lenses and I have to say they are one of the best investments I've made in shooting gear.

This is a Ranger ColorMag style lens and my camera phone. You get the idea that a purple lens is tailor made for orange targets on green backgrounds. In real life its even more striking, you cant NOT see the clay.

That is correct. Left is just regular camera shot. Right is a lens that has the RE Colormag coating. Not a great photo on the right as to make it the same size I had to skew it a bit. Or I got jam on my camera lens again..

A couple of years ago I was shooting trap and watching other guys that really could shoot. When using the Purple lens, the clays looked as if they were "exploding" in the sky. Very impressed at how well that colour is at DECREASING the GREEN in the back while INCREASING the ORANGE.

I always liked ranger bronze, don't think it's available anymore. Was an excellent colour.

The key things to consider are a shade dark enough to let you keep your eyes fully open and pupils dialated. If they are just tiny dots you are loosing your depth perception.

I'd suggest a bronze colour for bright days and blue sky backgrounds. Dark purple for bright days and green backgrounds. Light purple for darker days with green backgrounds.

A just faintly yellow lens for darker rainy days. The bright yellow lenses are too much I find.

Some of my favourite glasses, though not made anymore were the Ray ban shooters with the ambermatic lenses. Made back when they were owned by Bausch and lomb.

I own a couple pairs of Ambermatics, and find that their tendency to go even darker in the cold weather made them not my first choice for shooting.

Amazing general outdoor lenses though, particularly in warmer climates. They let me t a couple different colors from the later Photochangable line, namely Rose and Blue, both of which are very nice.
