THE TRIALS OF A BRASS VULTURE

So after shooting up my own stock, and since i was shooting little over the last year or two, i'm finally ramping back to the point where i can't afford to just go out and buy a box or two to plink with.

Ok self, I says, lets dig out all the brass we've got set aside and get it sorted and tumbled.

!!WHERE THE #$#@ DID ALL THIS BRASS COME FROM!! .

There's nothing for it, time to call in the reinforcments. I lure an unsuspecting buddy over (beer may have been mentioned)and we spend two hours sorting the 38 from the 9 from the 40 from the 45 from the 357 from the 223 from the 30-06.....you get the idea. (its good to have friends who want to shoot your guns, it equals free slaves).

So we finish up with about 2000 9, 1300 40's, 500 45's and maybe the same for 38 and 357, and a mixed bag of rifle stuff. Now to tumble,,,

Aw crap, i forgot how small the lyman 1200's are,, i need a cement mixer here,,,,in they go a (VERY) little bit at a time......

Alright! The first batch is clean, take it out and

OH ####, guess who forgot that the lyman tuffnut with the red powder on it gets EVERYWHERE,,,,
(The prick who invented this stuff worked for Sarah Brady i'm sure)
...it floats in the air and covers everything with a fine layer of red flour. Sigh...now I know why a buddy gave it to me free (bastard! he's still laughing). ((if it would ever wear out i'd get clean new stuff, but it still cleans great and i'm too damn cheap))

and now i have to wash the brass to get the rouge off of it,,,into the sink, whew, wife not looking, wash it off , rinse, spread in front of the fireplace to dry.......only have to do this about 15 more times,,,,,hehehehehehe, and i'm having fun! :dancingbanana:

Yaaaaa! the 38 is done......

booooo, i just turned a white towel pink when my hands where not as clean as i thought! #@$%@#$ tuffnut

She who must be obeyed! is gonna smite me!

tuffnut is pita for sure but when I used it (also too cheap to throw it out) Iput a piece of heavy pastic over the barrell of the tumbler and put hte cover over it---no more dust

You have a pitiful amount of dirty brass. Buy plain crushed Walnut (cheap!) media and stop complaining.

I thought this was silly until I tried it. My media lasts twice as long with much less dust!

But someones gotta do it! Plus i have nothing better to do , anyways, the 357 is done now, and i picked out all the 357 that ended up in my 38 while i was checking for cracks.

And i will buy plain crushed walnut, when this stuff stops working. (remember, i said cheap?)

plus this isn't all my brass, its just what i had dirty. I thought i had two or three hundred rounds sitting around, not a couple K.

I will try that dryer sheet trick as soon as i go to plain walnut, i see it again and again. Do you add anything to the plain walnut?

Sigh, now for the 40, i hate that stuff, gets the 9 stuck in it, adn gets stuck in teh 45 in turn.

If you sorted why is your brass getting mixed:p? When I said crushed walnut was cheap I meant it. $25 for 50lbs. A pound lasts me 6 months.... I go through 500-5000 brass per month.

lol ok, that more like 5 months for me when i'm shooting regularly, (hangs head in shame)

and i'm done all the 357 and 38. as to why its mixed, i'm blaming the hired help....(er, and not the beer)

whew,,,,just over half the 40's done,,,still have 9's and 45's

Just realized i'm screwed for small pistol primers!

Can anyone pass me the flint and steel...............

You know I have a set of brass sorters and would have loaned them to you, right?

The rant continues

Some complete ARSE (ie me )

threw a bunch of 9mm brass in what i thought was straight 40

now i'm picking the cases apart from thier new relationships and emptying the media out..........

on the bright side, almost done all the 40 now,,,,and i know the 45 is pure,,,(i hope)

Get some crushed walnut, mix it 4:1 walnut to Tuffnut. Throw in cut up used pieces of dryer sheets and tumble away. The walnut cleans, the Tuffnut polishes and the sheets keep the crappy dust in check :D .

(E)

well, half the 45 is done, my wife is bemused at the lake of brass surrouding the fireplace drying, and when i blow my nose it comes out red.

lessons learned

1 tumble the brass that needs it as you make it rather then letting in pile up

2 Be VERY wary of light colour towels while tumbleing, unless your single, (or want to be)

3 when i'm done, the tough nut is going in the garbage and i'm powerwashing my tumbleer and seperator

4 there is no such thing as small pistol primers anymore,,,,

1) I tumble/size as soon as I get the brass home.

2) Thankfully, I'm single :)D).

3) I use Frankford tumble media. Cheapest stuff on the shelf, and it works like MAGIC. :)dancingbanana:)

4) I'm still saying it's a geographical thing... I live in a city of 158K people, with one sole provider, and unless you're picky on brand, he's got primers for everyone.

(Unless you insist on shopping at WSS or some other foolish Wal-Joint like that. :p:nest:)

2) your poor, long-suffering wife. It's only fair that you share in her suffering.

4) lesson learned: keep a minimum inventory of a couple of thousand. I've had decent luck with small pistol primers, but a terrible time finding small rifle primers.

I too have a Lyman 1200 which has served me well for almost 20 years but I now also have a Dillon CV-2001 which is awsome for those big brass loads, here is the specs from their web site:

Dillon's CV-2001 Vibratory Case Cleaner
Stock Number: 20493

Dillon's CV-2001 Vibratory Case Cleaner is the largest in the industry. Its 12-1/2 quart bowl capacity will allow you to polish up to 1,300 .38/.357 or 550 .30-06 cases per hour.
