range backstops

Yes. They suck. As do all impact type backstops. Essentially lead and ricochet generators due to the way bullets are dealt with.
In this day and age Snail type low impact bullet capture backstops are the only sensible solution. They do require more room, and are a little harder to build, but they are the best system out there.

Shoot a lot at a straight 45 degree plate range and it throws the odd one back out. Lead dust is certainly an issue too.

The Venitian style might be alright if well designed and has a huge space benefit compared to others. I know someone building one for home shop use and interested to see how it turns out.

Any new real range should probably look into bullet capture or low impact designs IMO.

has anyone shot at a indoor range that has a venetian blind style backstop??
There's a nice indoor range in Hong Kong that uses sheets of rubber Linatex like "curtains". The bullets pass thru to the bullet catcher but they can't bounce back out again. The stuff they use on side walls is called Rugapol (sp?).

We had one like that a few years back, 1995ish, it had a rubber curtain like conveyor belt material and behind that was crushed rubber pellets. It absorbed the impacts and absolutely no bounce back or ricochets and didnt take up much more space than a louvered/Venetian style steel backstop.

Yes Waterford has one and we do get the odd one coming back and a lot of lead debri right in front of the backstop. Oxford and wentworth also have them
