Range day with my 40-60 Maynard. More range time!

Buck & I put this together last week. The donor rifle was a near mint 1881 Carl Gustaf Rolling Block in 8 X 58 RDK. The barrel I acquired on the EE, chambered in 40-60M, a take-off a Remington #5 Smokeless action. My action is smaller than the #5, so, the barrel was set back 1/2" and re chambered, threads re-cut and the barrel installed. D&T for a scope base. The scope will remain on the rifle for load development, then, reverting to the tang sight.
The rifle:
The fore end came with the barrel and matches the butt stock very closely. I will refinish them at some future date and make a cartridge caddy for it.

The first load was 20 Grs IMR4198

As the charge was increased, the group tightened up.

....all the way to 22.0 Grs.

At 22.5 Grs, I got a flyer and a pair of snake eyes.
At 23 grs, the group opened up to almost 3 inches.
Trying Rx 7 this Friday.

I will try BP at some point. I have another 40 cal that we built over the winter. This one is a 40-70 Sharps Straight built on a Uberti 1885. Buck made the barrel from a chunk of 4140 HTSR barrel mat'l. Drilled, reamed and rifled in Buck's basement, on his home built long hole machine.
The Uberti was a nice rifle in it's own right, but I was really wanting a 40-70 SS Roller after fondling Buck's personal rifle. Originally, the plan was to build the 40-70 on one of my 8x58RDK actions but plans change, don't ya know?
The 38-55 barrel ended up being fitted to the RB action!
I'm still developing a load for this one as well. As for intended use, just gonna lob 400 gr. chunks of lead at distant targets!!!

Very nice... I have yet to try smokeless in my roller in 40/50 SS still in the fire form stages I have approx 50 more brass to go then they will be all fire formed
then time to start load development.

Yes, I'm using 30-40K I bought the reloading package from Roger. I did fireform a few .303BR while test firing the rifle and they worked out OK, but I now have several 100 cases made with 30-40 K.
 
oldrodder: Interesting post. Results look promising, so far. I am curious to know why you chose .40-60 Maynard for your project? Not likely a well known cartridge, to many folks.

Because the barrel that I bought was chambered in that caliber!!! LOL!!! I already have a 40-65 Win. (Uberti 1885) and a 40-70 SS, also built on a Uberti 1885. It seemed a logical choice, and brass can be made easily from 30-40 Krag or .303 BR.
 
I was reading on the ASSRA forum and talking with the late Reverend Al about smokeless loads for my 40/50 sharps straight he was having great groups with IMR4198 and was working up loads with AA2495 using 38/55 load data

The 40 / 60 Maynard is not that far off ...I hope to get out soon with my roller but we are still in winter mode here in Manitoba, snow is slowly melting -12 here today

I've great luck with IMR4198 in all the straight walled cartridges that I've tried it in! Also did well with 5744 & Rx-7

Weather wise, we had a nice week last week but today is -22!!! There's a wood stove in the shooting shack and lots of wood, so I'm all good!!!
BTW, what bullet weights are you shooting in your 40-50?
 
I am working with the saeco moulds one is .410 at 370 gr the other is .410 at 410 ish gr cast 1/20
still in fire form mode so no groups to show I will fire of my last 50 or so in the next few weeks when weather warms up
My roller was a 1870 model with new Green Mountain Barrel the block was bushed and smaller firing pin done ..fire forming with 3fg Goex and 370 gr bullets right now.
I have a pound of 2495 and two lbs of 4198 and lots of black to play with ...just got to make time to cast and build loads


I think I sold you my Snover mould back in September 2020 lol

No, I got my Snover and a Lyman 385 Gr from Ellwood Epps. Advertised as "Used" but appeared unused when I got them! The other 40 cal mould I have is a N.O.E. The one that works best in my three .40 cal rifles is the Snover. I'm trying the NOE in the 40-60 Maynard & the 40-70 SS next Friday.
