Hi guys

this coming spring I am stepping up my gopher game. I just bought a 204 ruger and a VX3 8.5-25x50mm.
I am looking to get out to 400-500yrds. right now I got a cheap bushnell range finder. mostly use for setting up my targets for load development.

the bushnell only pick up deer from 300-350 yrds so its usless for gopher sized stuff.

Is their any range finders that would fill my needs that's not 2000$ plus?

You might want to go with a bino/rf combo. My bushnell fusion 1 mile will actually range a mile. I would be able to get gopher mounds out to 700-800 easy. The extra magnification helps with small targets. I'm sure the leica or sig would serve you well to but I like the combo so you only have to carry one thing and its always with me.

There were a couple Leica's in the EE well before Santa Claws time.
Priced what I figured reasonably well.

The thing I found with these range finders is they tend to zero in
close qwarters more reliably than the competition.

I too have found the price point of a rangefinder that would work for gophers to be excessive, but technology has progressed since I did my research several years ago.

Gophers are so small and non-reflective that most rangefinders are effective only to 1/3rd (or less) of the advertised distance.

My solution was to use the GPS on my phone and walk out to gopher patches and plant flags that would indicate wind and distance. Another time I borrowed a rangefinder but again I walked out to my shooting area planting flags while ranging back to my truck (which was large and reflective enough).

If you find one that is suitable for gophers (like the above mentioned Leica) please share.

I have the kilo 2000 as well. I find my Sig has great difficulty picking up smaller targets (coyote) accurately. The Sig is much faster than the Leica but I prefer the glass in the Leica, the Sig is blue and washout to my eyes.

Leica or Swarovski are among the best commercial models. I have Swarovski Laser Guide 8x30 and it reads cow size target at 1600m from the tripod with no problems. This model is discontinued though and Swaro only sells binoculars with a rangefinder now that are above $2000. If you can find a Laser Guide (last time I saw it at Sail for $890), I strongly recommend it. If not, I would by Leica CRF 2400-R.

Regret selling my Leica 2700. That’s a superb ranger finder and small beam too

I’m thoroughly impressed with mine so far. (One hunting seasons use.) I was shocked how far it ranged under less than ideal conditions when I first got it. 2400 meters, standing freehand is common.

I look forward to using it this coming spring. ;)

I'm not that impressed with the Leica 2700. Mind you my 2700 replaced a Vectronix PLRF15 that I owned for years so to compare the two isn't fair to the Leica.....it would be an apples to bananas comparison. I'd say the Leica 2700 is a good 1 mile or under range finder and is fairly priced for its capabilities.

... Vectronix PLRF15 ... to compare ... to the Leica. it would be an apples to bananas comparison.

:) Of course. Vectronix is from the different league. It's a military grade rangefinder with a capability to range up to 3+ km. Leica is a commercial product and as you said could be a good choice for the money.

Leupold has been born again, hard core, with this incredible new LASER rangefinding unit! This is the best value we have seen in a pocket LASER rangefinder to date. Long range shooting will test your limits with every shot.

The distances people are accurately shooting are staggering, which is where the RX-2800 TBR/W comes into play. With ½ yard accuracy out to 2,800 yards, 7x magnification, and an easy-to-read OLED display, this lightning quick rangefinder is guaranteed to stretch your skills.

The new Alpha IQ ranging engine also makes ranging smaller targets quicker than ever before, while our True Ballistic Range (TBR) technology takes into account the angle of your shot and your rifle's ballistics to put you dead on every time. Go farther faster with the new RX-2800 TBR/W.

I think I’ll just wait for a used Leica 1600 to show up somewhere. I don’t need more than 1000 yard ranging on steel plates or gophers
