For the money what is the best value in a range finder. I want it for range and hunting use. Nothing fancy just an accurate range meausrement out to 700-800 yds max.

Thanks for the advice

I haev the nikon monarch 800, it is useful, but not as much as I thought. The farthest I've managed to actually range a cow was 350 yards. I use when I get on a cutline to measure some prominent points in each direction and then use them as reference points when I am actually hunting.

If you can pick up an used Leica Im sure you'd be happy. If new and looking for a decent unit Id go with a Bushnell Elite 1500 or Yardage Pro Legend.

If I were shopping for one Id want one that can range a deer out to 400 yards if not farther, probably would never shoot one that far but it would be nice to know.

From the chatter on the forums I would stay way clear of the Leupolds, from what Ive read guys are having problems w/ them.

Cheers!!

I am happy with my Elite 1500 so far....... except for the fact that it made me realize how bad I sucked at ranging by eye.

I mostly use it like martinbns when hunting.

So what models out there can range deer out to 500yards? I wouldn't shoot one past 300 and prefer to get within 200 if there is opertunity, but with the right conditions during the anual cronic wasting culling I would give it a go if I knew the exact range.

I would spring for the extra few $$$ and get the Leica 1200 right from the start! If your feeling spendy, go for the Swarovski, I've heard of people ranging beyond 1200 yards with them!

UM

Buying the Leica 1200 first and being done forever would likely have been the cheapest approach. Having said that, my 900 Scan hangs right in there. From what I've seen of the Bushnell 1500 it is a POS. It couldn't range a hip-roof barn past 400, literally.
