Range finders

I started with an early Bushnell, graduated to a Leice LRF 1200, and now have the CRF 1200. It is truly awesome. It ranges forever, is waterproof and slips in a shirt pocket.

I'm not sorry I bought it, just sorry it wasn't available when I started with my first rangefinder. I would have saved some coin by buying it in the first place.

I have used the NewCon Optik 7?x40 binolular range finder for many years in all sorts of conditions. Three of my friends bought them also. They range out to 1600 yds with the right target. Easily 1000 yds with dodgy targets.

They are very precise, and the east german glass is very good optically. They are a bit heavy, but it saves one item on your person.

I left them out in the truck at -40 ---- very bad thing to do , extreme cold affects the lcd - NewCon fixed them that time for me no sweat.

But, i left them in the open truck in 120 degree F -- very bad thing to do , cost me about $100 to have NewCon fix them. My friend's units (they are more careful) continue to work properly. When I hunt, they are around my neck but tucked under my outer layer (if it is that cold) , and they work great with that little added warmth. They take a 9 volt normal battery that you can get anywhere.

Every now and then I look at the new little Leica model -- but will stay with the binocular version which I feel is very easy on the eyes while you are scanning / ranging.

They are about $1000 - havnt checked recently

Had the Yardage pro and was very happy until it simply stopped working for no apparent reason, cost so much to get fixed I never bothered.

To answer the question about do they sit around, well that depends on you. I found them super useful for ranging practice for IBO, and for golf. Of course they are also great for firearms related use, but that would be a lessor amount of use for me, I don't generally shoot so far I need a laser, though there are many situations where a quick check would eliminate the whole yardage question and extend your range significantly. There were also some general uses laying out ranges or doing other survey related work. I find it hard to have too many devices that measure stuff.

Anyone interested in a Swarovski 8-30 Guide laser, I have one for sale in the ee forum
