hope this is in a reasonable forum...

question is - what is the typical accurate range of 9mm ammo from a regular production handgun (4.5" to 5" barrel)? by "accurate", i mean - at what distance could someone hit a coke can 80% of the time? at what distance could someone hit a pineapple 80% of the time?

just trying to get a "laymans terms" handle on firearm -vs.- usable accurate distance.

is there maybe a chart somewhere that would even show me the "usable accurate distance" for the various types of ammunition (like 22LR, 9mm, .45, and so on)?

there is no such chart really...

it all depends on 1) the shooter 2) the gun and 3) ammo used

also type of sights (optical vs iron) and the rest (bench vs off hand)

if you're a decent shot you should be able to hit a coke can with any of the calibers are 25 yards of hand, even at 50 if you're that good or shooting from the rest esp with an optical sights ...it's really is mostly up the shooter...cuz a bullet will go quite a distance ;)

but 9mm service gun is more of a 25yards gun :)

It goes without saying that the operator must be able to hold the pistol, and that the inherent accuracy of the particular pistol is a limiting factor. That said, the quality of the ammunition is everything.

thanks! i guess i thought "average firearm, typical factory-loaded ammunition, reasonably skilled shooter". obviously best-best-best could go quite far, and crap-crap-crap might not even hit a wall.

ok, at least the "25~50 yards" gives me a rough feeling of "accurate range".

thx!

With my 9mm Glock (unsupported, weaver stance, no optics, no buttstock :p). I can hit a shotgun clay at 50m... at least 1 out of 5 times.... (usually the 5th but never on the 1st shot ;))
