Hi All;
So, today's mission was to determine the impact of using QD rings on my CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39. In particular, whether or not the rifle would 'return to zero' at 50m after removing and reinstalling the optic using Leupold QD rings.
Why QD vs. permanent rings? Because this handy little carbine has open sights as well, and hey they are sometimes fun and useful to use! Being able to remove a scope makes transport and storage easier. And its damn cool.
This set up is designated to be my 16 year old's deer rifle this season. The gear is as follows:
> CZ 527 Carbine / 7.62x39mm
> Leupold VX-6 1-6x24 30mm scope
> Warne 30mm Medium QD rings (specifically for CZ's 16mm integral rail)
> Federal Power Shok 123gr 7.62x39 ammunition
Here is the setup:
The rifle / optic was sighted in several weeks ago using another type of ammo (Hornady).
I kept the procedure pretty simple.....loaded up the Federal ammo, fired a three shot group, using a steady rest (but by no means a 'lead sled')
The result:
The red square is 1" x 1". So, I was very pleased with how the ammo performed on the first group.
Next, I removed the scope, and then reinstalled it. Then I Took three more shots. Would it return to zero? Or at least hunting capable accuracy?
Here is the result of the next three shots.
Two conclusions:
One - The ammo agrees with the gun; Each group was approx 1/2" in size off of an decent rest at 50m. I don't doubt that with a better rest, removing most human error, the group would be tighter. Indicating the gun and ammo shoot more than straight enough for hunting at the ranges I'll be looking at.
Two - Removing and reinstalling the optic with the QD rings resulted in the group moving approx 1/2" at 50m. More than satisfactory for its intended application. And frankly quite impressive as there is some human impact on the group.
Summary - The Warne QD rings and CZ 527 are a winning combo. I'm excited to take it out to 100m with a super firm rest, to see what this rifle / ammo is capable of.
Cheers!
