Hi All,
I have been working on upgrading my 2007 Norinco M14S for a while now. I really enjoyed shooting it in the Blackfeather stock with only the M14.ca op rod spring guide and the M14.ca Casm scope mount, put about 2000 rounds through it in this configuration. Only problem was group size depending on the day and the load I would go from 1 to 2.5 inches for 5 shot groups at 100 yards.....quite often on the same day. Was making me crazy. My M1A loaded would do .5 to 2 inches at the same time but usually around 1.5 inches quite regularly so I knew it was sometimes the shooter but quite often I could honestly blame the Norico's skinny barrel for my woes. (vertical stringing was phenominal at times)
I started my modifications with a take off Springfield M1A barrel and a USGI gas assembly with the original Norinco bolt.....headspace measured at about 1.648 which was about .009 more than the original with Norinco barrel and bolt!
So...back to the drawing board as they say. Installed a Springfield bolt and head space is now about 1.637, still large but back in the same realm as the original Norinco headspace that served me so well for at least 2000 rounds. (after lapping in the bolt which was not bad and only added about .001 to the head space.
Now to the important part, took a few rounds to sight it in and have to readjust my Casm scope mount considerably to accomodate the different barrel but when I finally got it on paper I achieved a 5 shot group at 100 yards that is .585 inches. May be a fluke but still indicates to me that I'm on the right track.
Want to thank Barney (Tactical teacher) for his assistance (with technical advise, and making my wallet a lot lighter!!) he made the transformation possible and was a lot of fun to meet and buy parts from. Wish he would quit posting parts for sale as I just can't seem to resist the urge to try more stuff all the time!
IMG_20150207_135539.jpg indicated group is when I figured out where I was on the paper and settled on a common aiming point IE please try to aim at one place (picked a random bullet hole already on the target)if you want to get a decent group??

Looks promising Rodney. I've been waiting to hear how the new barrel and bolt were working out. If you get many more groups like that you're going to have me looking at a medium barrel.

Hi Tony,
Shots fired without rushing the shots so maybe 30 seconds or so between shots? Only a guess. Temp about -5 celcius so cold but not horibble.
Barney,
Really appreciate the help and the availability of the parts that are in such short supply in Canada... still haven't figured out where to use the BNIB USGI trigger group!
Paul,
Where have you been? Thought I was all alone again with my M14 clones! I haven't been around for about a month now myself, sulking and waiting for warmer weather has kept me busy!!

Me too,
Only had 24 rounds loaded for the M1A, since the weather was fairly nice today I stole them to try out the new build. Took 19 rounds to get sighted in, Glad I did, makes the winter a little more tolerable having a good day at the range.

We should hook up and shoot at my club when the weather is better

Rodney - Looks like we are shooting alternate weeks. I've been to the club the last few weekends while you were hiding. Think I have finally found a load that kinda shoots in the AR. It's a toy gun but much easier to shoot off-hand than the M305...at least for me. As I type this I can hear Barney in the back of my mind yelling at me to drop my purse :).

If the weather is half decent, I will shoot next week and get back to the M305. I still haven't shot it much with the new heel bedding.
