Range Report: Savage Alaskan Brush Hunter .338 Winchester Magnum

Thats a great report. i like the handier lengths, for extended backcountry travel. but i thought it likely gave up more velocity than that; and a ton of muzzle blast. So good to hear you like it.

It's loud, but what .338 Win. Mag. isn't? Don't get me wrong. This gun kicks, but it doesn't kick so hard you can't master it. Bonus is I feel safe walkin" around with this gun in griz countyr. That's the acid test for me. I also like that you can break rocks with it at 300 yards. I don't find myself asking the nagging question: "Is this gun enough for bear?"

I know it is. That's comforting.

An uncle was mortally mauled by a griz in southern Alberta in the 1890's. Going into griz country undergunned? - not for me thank you very much.

Yes, i 've admired that package for awhile now, beauty proportions. And who really cares if its a bit harsh considering whats its job is. My only reservation was giving up too much velocity. So your report is very intersting to me. If its pushing 225 at 2800 well loaded, thats going to do nicely. Whomp. If ever necessary, thats not going to be a fair fight.

225gr at 2800 fps are good numbers if you want to not feel undergunned. My Savage 116 with a 24" barrel sends a 210 Nos Partition at 2850 fps (handloads). I really like the calibre and like the gun although it is a bit combersome in the bush. An 18" would do well in the tighter spots, but I'm not a fan of muzzle blast.

Sounds like you've got yourself a winner there.
