This thread is a reply to CGN member "skinnadoor" question on game ammo. I would have posted it there but the were so many pics that I thought that I would start my own.

4 types of ammo were used today. 2 are FMJ (not for hunting) and 2 are Soft Point:
Norinco made 7.62

Malayian made 7.62

Federal 168 gr. Sierra MatchKing BTHP

Federal 150 gr. Power Shock 308 (sorry, no pic)

And lastly, the rifle used.
A Norinco M-14S: barrel index, tuned gas system, recoil buffer, USGI Op Rod Spring Guide, Smith Enterprise 2024 mount holding a Falcon menace 4-14 scope MP20 reticle.

All shooting was done off the bipod and were at 100 Meters except the last pic was at 200 Meters. Also all 5 shot groups had about 10-15 min cool down in between. I didn't take the caliper to the rage but were measured at home.

So, that day started off with just a couple of rounds of Norc to get the barrel fowled. Started with the Norc simply cause it was open and within arms reach.

Norinco Ammo
Loaded 5 rounds and sent them down range. In the pic it shows two groups, circled 1 and 2. First group was shots 1-5 and the second were the shots 20-25. 1: 2.33 in. and 2: 2.63 in. two holes touching Not to bad.

Malayian Ammo
Same as before. Shots 6-10 are group 1 and shots 26-30 are group 2. 1: 2.22 in. and 2: 3.50 in.

Federal Power Shock 150 gr.

Now here is the suprising part, loaded up, 5 shots down range and 3.5 hit paper on shots 10-15!!! Group 2 were shots 30-35. Not impressed with that ammo.1: 2.80 in.and 2: 3.13 in.

Federal 168 gr. Sierra MatchKing BTHP

Now this is were things start to get good. Group 1 in shots 16-20 and didn't turn out as good as I thought match ammo sure do. Group 2 is far better, shots 36-40.
1: 2.55 in. and 2: 2.28 in. two holes touching

Wanting to see how good this stuff is I set a target up at the 200 m mark. I also used a pad for the but of the rifle to get it as steady as posible. I loaded up 5 rounds, sent them away and went to inspect. Holly cow!!! 1.62 in. with a spoiler

It did WAY better than I expected. Now there was a spoiler and that was operator error. So excluding the one, doing the math, that put's it in about the .81 MOA (not bad for a semi auto:D). Now weather it could do this all day long, who knows. I don't have that $$$ to buy 100 rounds of that stuff, it's pricey but it does show that you can get good preformence out of these $400 Norc's with just a little "tuning up". I'm very happy with rifle and it's not going anywhere.

The way to afford to shoot the good stuff is HANDLOADING!!!
I shoot the 168gr Matchking all the time because I handload it .I figure it costs me around .75 cents a round.I just shot a couple 1 inch groups in a row with my M14.With my 700p, I can shoot under an inch all day!
That means Im paying 15 dollars for 20 rounds, and its better quality than the Federal Gold match (IMHO), how much was the ammo, anyway???
Nice shooting, by the way!!!

Excellent report!!!

I had good luck with my Norc 14 with 160 gr. It hated the 168 but the 150 wasnt bad. Each gun is like a woman....

I think these guns dont like shooting under 200 yards as I get better groups at 200 -250 than at 100

Wish I would have seen this before I went to canadian tire and picked up 10 boxs of Federal Power Shock 150 grain

THat ammo'll do just fine for hunting, but its not the most consistant target ammo, thats for sure.
Think of the bright side, the sooner you use it all, the sooner you'll have all that once-fired brass to re-load!

I'm not sure how much the ammo was. I had a Parker Hale in .300 WM and I bought a box of the MatchKing for it and ended up selling the rifle. So I traded it on here for the box of MatchKing .308. My guess is that there about $35 to $40 a box.

The Federal Power Shok ammo is the most accurate ammunition I have tried in my M14.

Of course, mine is a relative lemon. It gets 3+ MOA with the Federal and some handloads, 6-8 MOA with most any surplus ammo.

grant chow and i hit the range the other day.
His norc is bone stock other than a F/G usgi stock i sold him and a winchester usgi near new bolt i lapped in for him.
It was quite rewarding helpin him build that rifle and then seeing the smile on his face after he sent a couple mags worth down range. Strictly a .308 rifle now and while we didn't measure groups...... my guess is gonna be easy sub MOA.
the addition of that bolt shrunk his groups considerably and turned the average norc into a real shooter ;)

I've had the best results with Remington Core Lokt 150gr rounds in my M14. Consistent <1 MOA cartridges for me. The Federal 150gr Powershock is garbage. Consistent 3-5 MOA.

Some just cant shoot well

And why would I lie? There were 3 other people standing behind me when I shot this quarter. It's all about the ammo man. My M14 is lousy with SA surplus. 3-5 MOA groups, but with the right stuff, sub MOA. That's M14s for ya.

Ignore the poo poo 'ers - Just cause they cant get a norc to perform doesnt mean we cant enjoy the excellent accuracy a $400 semi auto .308 :):):)
