Range Safety Officer course, Whats it consist of ?

Highly variable from club to club. When I took mine it was a thorough going-over of range safety and usage rules, duties expected, information about the club leadership and how to reach them when necessary, emergency procedures, and general advice on how to deal with difficult personalities on the range. There was no practical component to it. We also got some paperwork, identifier badge, and hat.
Overall, nothing was difficult but there's a lot of admin material to cover.

No shooting involved with the one I took either and much the same as pop describes.
I just took the one at our range.
It was about 3.5 hours long in total. It consisted of the things already mentioned, including range commands, emergency procedures, club rules, etc.
At the end we all took our 22's over to the firing line and each of us took a turn acting as RSO for the others.
Then, that was it. We got a badge, but no hat!
I've actually never worked with an RSO before. We're a rural club, and in the two years i've been there, i've gone shooting many times, but only twice has there been other people there, and that was just one other guy and our club has a rule that you only need an rso with 3 or more shooters.
All that to say, i've never experienced the "range nazi" that everyone complains about.
I took the course so that i could help out new shooters. Our club's membership rules say that, after taking the club membership course, you still do not become a member until you complete 3 supervised shoots with an RSO.
When i first joined, i had a really hard time finding rso's available to do supervised shoots with me, and as a result it took a long time to complete my membership. That was frustrating. Since i live close to the range and am self-employed, i figured if i were an rso i could pop over and supervise new member shoots very easily and save them the frustration that i had.

You got an actual badge? I guess the club RSOs I've encountered here in ON have been plainclothes, or maybe Secret Police.
Because our centerfire long range from 600 to 1K is shot out of a tower, our centrrfire RSO course involves proper procedures for opening up, and range control and when shutting down the lines for target changes or steel painting .
Our rimfire RSO requirements are obviously different, as is the RSO designation for our indoor range which involves standard safety procedures plus our HVAC operation .
Outdoor pistol ranges have different procedures as does our trap range and the archery ranges .
The RSO's needs to be certified on each different range they attending to.
