Range Setup-Show Us What You've Got

I'm slowly working on building up my range, and adding features as I can.

I'm always looking for more ideas, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'll add pics and info as I can, but to get it started here is what I have pics of currently.

If anyone else wants to share ideas or show how they are set up, I'd love to see them added.

A barricade my son and I built this summer, it has four positions to it: a rooftop, a wall/window, a parapet, and an adjustable sling to use for a rest.

Sorry for the crappy pics, sun was down when I got home from work today.

This is the small kyl rack we built, it goes from 1 1/2" down to 1/4". We have it set up at 50 yds but might push it back to 80.

And the one we have at 100 yds. It starts at 3.5" and goes down to 1". This one also needs to be pushed back, probably to 125 yds for now.

And various other plates/racks we use, they are all just pushed out of the way for now as I am doing some work to the range.

My range has an area 80 yds long enclosed by a dirt berm I'm constantly adding to. Slow going with just a skidsteer. My goal is eventually 10 ft high, I'm pulling dirt from a nearby dugout whenever I have free time.

Widening the range, I'm also going to stack flax bales along one side. I'm stacking 2 high, hoping it will help a bit with sound.

The enclosed part of the range is for rimfire, shotgun, etc. Parallel to it is where we shoot longer range where we have steel plates set at various ranges in the field.

So anyway, I guess I need to build a roof over my bench! Almost no rain all summer, it settled in this afternoon while we were trying to record dope for a couple rifles. Set targets up in 25 yd increments out to 275 yds, then gave up to take the rifles inside to wring out.

Excuse to tear it apart and clean it I guess...

See if the info repeats next time, and then keep going to 400 yds.

A quick pic of the targets we set out yesterday for collecting data for dialing. 25 yd increments out to 275, the last two are beyond the rock pile and harder to see in the pic. Pic was taken from approx the 80 yd marker (from the bench).

We were using the torsos and 8" plates just for figuring elevation, my plan is to use smaller plates for a more permanent setup.

Also, once I confirm my dials are decent I'll move the plates further out to try the same increments out to 400. Probably ambitious enough for me with a .22.

We were using ammo with a published velocity of 1082, so right in the ballpark of whatever we are likely to use regularly. I know it will vary by ammunition but just seeing if i can come up with a baseline chart to start with. I'm also planning to collect data for something like SK Long Range Match.

Any other members feel free to chime in with ideas or pointers, I was hoping this would bring some heads together for setting up some fun shooting.

I shoot mostly from the bench. Here is my range setup. Target stands at 25, 50, 100, 200, 250, 300, and 350 yards.

Thanks for posting, that looks like a great setup. I only have a few trees around my bench, wind is a huge factor here.

I'm only using targets at 25 yd intervals to do some data collection, the plan is to space them out more eventually.

My bench roof is going to have to wait, the wife is waiting for me to complete her garden shed. Maybe next year.

Deluxe setups for home use there guys, thumbs up

for an easy .22 target we have hung circular saw blades at longer distances, they give a nice loud report
With SV they are good for 200 plus, inside that they get beat up too bad
we have a set of swinging silhouettes sized for rimfire rifle at 40/60/77/100 to practice freehand for the local shoots

I started out using whatever steel I could get my hands on, mostly 1/2" to 3/4" plates from work but I found centerfire rounds would shred them. Erring on the side of caution I switched to buying ar500 type plates, which was a big improvement.

I still use mild steel for things like the kyl racks we built, but those are strictly for .22 and have stood up well for that.

This is one of the original plates I used after one session shooting .308 and .223 at 100 yds. Lots of deformation and a few punched right through.

Edited to add, I hope that target isn't taken as an indication of my skills as a marksman!
