Yesterday, together with 2 other mates, I headed down to a local range to use the 100yd range to test my latest purchase for the first time.
The range I normally shoot on is restricted to nothing more powerful than 7.62 NATO so I hadn't been able to shoot the Ruger there.
However the range restrictions of this local place on all types of smokeless small arms are a case length of 3" with a max cal of .458" so the 450/400 3" was fine.
All of the ammo I used was the Hornady 400gr RNSN factory load at 2050fps and the Ruger has been set up in the factory with this specifically in mind.
Now, to properly fulfil the requirements of shooting such a rifle I had to dress accordingly......

Perhaps the gloves seem excessive but I wanted to ensure I had a good grip of the rifle just in case it turned out to be more lively than expected and the field vest is, well, good for holding ammo and puts a little extra padding on the old shoulder.
I shot the first 2 rounds at 25yds and they turned out OK so we moved the target back to 50yds and put 2 more on it......

The 1st and 2nd shots @25yds were in the centre by the 9 and at the bottom right in the 7 ring respectively.
The 3rd and 4th @50yds are to the right about an inch apart higher up on the 9 and 7 rings respectively.
Now, I must add that none of these were snap shots even though they were offhand and open sights.
But my mates had a shot of the Ruger and I'm quietly proud that my shots were more accurate than theirs, especially since they've both owned BRNO 602s in 375 H&H and claimed the 450/400 was lighter in the shoulder.
One of them already has a Ruger No1 450/400 on order and the other having shot the Ruger is severely tempted to purchase one too and make it 3 450/400s in the local area.
I've also taken some video footage and will post this on YouTube with some links so you can check it out.
Incidentally, in the spirit of the afternoon, one of the other guys also brought his Brazillian 1935 Obendorf M98 in 7x57.
It is a superb rifle and gave the afternoon an African flavour.
He was also impressed with my pith helmet and is going to buy one for himself.
Here's a pic of me shooting the Mauser......

Needless to say the entire afternoon was serious fun.
Here's a couple of vids to tickle your fancy:

BTW....this shot was was taken at 25yds NOT 250! :-[

And another vid of all 6 shots I fired that afternoon:

The vids have turned out to be useful actually.
They revealed that the LoP is a little short for me.
I intend to put a better pad on it anyway but some spacers as well should make it better to sight with and kinder on the shoulder.
This also pointed to the fact that the LoP on my T3 Lite Stainless in 9.3x62 is also probably too short and is the reason I'm constantly at risk of getting tagged by the scope.
It already has a LimbSaver but will get some spacers too.
Does anyone know of a good bolt-on pad for the Ruger No1s?

One final sorta trivial note: I discovered why pith helmets are constructed the way they are.
The sort of visor at the front sits low so it perfectly frames the sights and keeps the sun out.

Thanks for an excellent thread and enjoyable videos.
Looks like it has a bit of recoil, but in that department my No.1 would probably come close.... its a 450 / 348 Ackley Improved and can be loaded to nip on the heels of a 458 WM, that is providing the shooter's shoulder will take it.. :D

Hello kombi1976..
LimbSaver makes a ground to fit pad for the Ruger #1... I have put one on my .35 Whelen and .405 Win. #1's..
They are not 100% fit but close enough for me..
:)

pith's are out... like by a few decades =) get some kevlar!
Y'know, that's the problem with you tacticool-addicted mall cop wannabes......ya got no style! :D
I'm happy you guys enjoyed the vids.
I certainly enjoyed shooting it although, yeah, you do pay a price at the shoulder.
You also pay one at the hip pocket.
I was fortunate to get those rounds with the rifle as I bought it near new and the PO had only put 6 rounds through it.
But a box of 20 Hornady factory rounds costs AUD$129! :(
Divide it up and every shot was AUD$6.45 each.
Kevan, your 450 Alaskan (I presume that's what you mean by 450/348 Imp) would have similar stats to the 450/400 NE 3" depending on how hot you load it.
It does use less powder though.
The '400 uses 87gr of most powders for the 2050fps load that doubles are regulated for.
Of course, used in a Ruger No1 the sky is the limit.....well, actually my SHOULDER defines the limit.
The '400 cal might give you a tad more penetration as the BC would be better being a longer 400gr.
But with a 500gr pill the 450 Alaskan is definitely more powerful.
The question is, how many of those sort of loads are you happy to shoot in a sitting?
Thanks for the tip on the Limbsavers, nrut.
Is there a specific product number I should look for?

I have no problem with recoil.....have you ever heard the saying : " Where there is no sense, theres no feeling ? " ;)

I put a grind to fit Pachmayr on my #1H. I prefer the grind-to-fit option to ensure that you get it fit properly. I've never had luck with pre-fit pads.

From their website..

When I was looking for them I saw that Brownells had them but a search here at CGN showed that P&D in Calgary had them also... I bought mine from P&D..

NOTE that you want the one in the link for your wood stocked #1.. LimbSaver also makes another size for the Ruger Boat Paddle syn. stock it appears..

NOW you are going to have to provide us with a link to the vendor that sales the Pith Helmet you have...:)

Thanks for that, mate.
I'll follow up on that one.

Lawrence Ordnance in Sydney sells them for AUD$69 + shipping.
Here's a link:

I'm pretty sure Lawrence would send them to Canada.

Kevlar and a Ruger No.1 ( especially in that chambering) are like spinners on a 4X4 truck - they may look nice, but ANYONE who knows anything or has any kind of class for that matter, would not even think about it.
Ditto!

i'll bet the 1908 in 7x57 shot much better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KARAMOJO Bell killed 100's of Pacyderms with his, I believe a 275 Rigby (7x57) JITC

Pardon me for asking, but what the heck does this remark have to do with the Ruger # 1 we are talking about ?
Further to that who cares how good that 7x57 shot or the number of elephants it killed ??
They've been killed by scores of other rifles in various chamberings so what is your point ??

If you read at the beginning, Kevan, my mate brought out his mint Obendorf 1935 Brazillian M98 in 7x57 and we shot it offhand too.
Jim, it was much easier on the shoulder but it wasn't much more accurate if at all.
None of us are Boer sharp shooters and while most of the shots made it on the black the focus was on a man sized target shot quickly.
Bell, alternatively, tended to stalk right into a herd and put a bullet in exactly the right spot.
His technique on elephants was doubtlessly a little more scientific than the way were emptying clips at the paper target.

Nice looking gun and love the helmet here is a pic of mine . Ruger #1 in 500 Jefferies I will have to do a range report as soon as it warms up .
