range time with the .458

With the greatest respect, guys, generally rocks are not considered good targets no matter what you are launching at them downrange, for fear of ricochet. So we all know you were just kidding about shooting rocks, and the younger folks reading this can know that it was just a joke, so they don't go into their back forty (or their local range) and start shooting at rocks with their shootin' irons.........

I owned a Ruger 77 Mark I for four rounds. Handloads courtesy of Casull here on the board, who sold me the gun. Cast bullets about half the size of a Scheider's Red Hot hot dog sticking out the end of the case, and the gun made a swooshing sound when I opened the bolt, from the air rushing in......

Four rounds with the .458, or four rounds with George Foreman, about the same feeling....

Doug
For the most part, in most circumstances & under most conditions, you're right. However, depending on the range location, & the composition of the backstop, it doesn't always pose a hazard.

When I play with Barnes solids in my 450 Ackley, I am tempted to bring along a shovel, dig them up and reuse them! The few that I've recovered have never been deformed, just have rifling grooves engraved! Mine is a full wood 602 that left Brno as a 375 H&H before being rebarreled to a "serious" calibre and cartridge. Big borers are a hoot to shoot!

Sounds good!;) I don't think I've ever seen a Brno with full wood. How long have you had it? Is the wood factory or a custom job? Any pic's?:)

Just email or call when you want to go and I will bring along the 45-70 .
The 420 grain GC cast are very accurate, I hope I can repeat the groups.:) Talk to you soon , John

I just got back from the range. I forgot all about calling. Sorry guy, next time. I tested some 405gr FNBB, using IMR 4227 & a filler and they turned out pretty good!!:D Actually a little better out of 'your' 458 Brno than out of 'my';) model 70. Oh, the Brno may be up for sale, or possibly trade, in the not too distant future. If you're interested, let me know. Loads with the 525gr RNPB were better than my first tests, but there is still work to do on that bullet & weight.
