Well I got to chrony some 8mm-06 loads today, starting off with the 175 Sierra's with 60 grains of H4350 that clocked in at an even 2800 fps.:)
Next was the Remington 185 Core-Lokt bullets with 58.5 grains of H4350 that clocked in at 2663.:)
And then the big surprise of the day was the Sierra 150 grainers over 55 grains of H4895 and they tripped in at:eek: .....3024 fps...
Rifle is a Mauser Mod 98 Barrel length is 23 & 5/8

Nice to see someone shooting this old classic, and those loads sound about right for max loads. If you run short of load data, you can safely use any published max 30/06 load in the 8mm-06 and be just fine.

You'll always get higher velocities for a given bullet weight at a given pressure, as your case sizes are practically identical, but you have the larger bore.

Still, you're up over 60K psi with that load and he's down closer to 50K (and has a 23 1/2" barrel). He'd have no trouble pushing a 220gr at 2600 fps at 60K psi which should be fine in a M98 Mauser action.

so 2grs more powder pushes a bullet 40grs heavier at the same speed? bore diameter is very close. still seems slow. meh.

8mm-06

These were the first loads down the tube as I had no data to go on except some old Speer stuff. The loads showed no signs of pressure and can more than likely be loaded up some more. As with every gun I reload for I start low and work up and with this one it appears I have more room to upload if desired.:D

Nice to see another 8mm shooter out there! A word of caution concern those lighter 8mm bullets. I have used the 175 grain sierras in my 8x68S magnum and they worked great on paper but came apart like a cheap suit when they hit the shoulder of a big buck. I was pushing them a bit faster than you are, but stay close to 8x57 velocities if you want to use those bullets on game, since this is what they were designed for. A premium bullets such as a 185 grain TSX was designed for 325 short mag velocities and can handle max velocities of an 8mm 06 without problem.

With the exeption of the 3000+fps with the 150 grain bullet, the sierra may very well handle the loads you have just fine. Good luck!

I like the 180 Nosler Partition (now discountinued?) and the 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.

Don't be surprised when heavier bullets go faster than lighter bullets with the same load. The 170gr Speer for example has a long bearing surface and I have always pushed the 180 Nosler BT faster, due I think to its boat-tail design and sleek ogive.
