Heading down to Cabela's this weekend and one thing I have had on my 'wish list' for the last while has been a rangefinder. Who's got one? What brand? Do you like it? What do you recommend? My hunting consists of moose, deer, and bear and my shooting would almost certainly be under 300yds.

If all of your shooting will be under 300 yards, the value of a laser rangefinder will be limited.I myself have owned a bushnell 400,a bushnell 800 and now a leica 1200.The leica is by superior in that it has a narrower beam,so it is less likely to accidently range objects between you and the target. This did happen with both bushnells. The leica also has a red led readout which is easier to see in low light.Be aware that the ratings for rangefinders are for highly reflective objects, not for animals. On average they will only range a deer sized animal out to 1/2 or 2/3 of the units rating.

I have a bushnell compact 600, and it is good. However, I don't often hunt with it. I scout with it, and set up yardage ribbons when bowhunting etc, but I found I don't usually carry it while hunting.

stubblejumper, thanks for the info. Also let me clarify about the distance. Most of our moose hunting is done from a boat or canoe. I find judging distance across water to be tricky as there are no land references to aid you in your guess. The rangefinder would (I think) help in these situations. I don't want to be shooting at animals that I think are 300yds away when in actuality they are 500.

I have a Bushnell Elite 1000.

I have ranged animals (elk) out to about 700 yards with it. Never had a reading longer than 885 yards on anyhting.

It has a cool angle feature, so you know how steep the angle is. A good feature so you don't shoot over a bighorn..:dancingbanana:

I use a Leica LRF 1200. Been out and ranged deer to 1045m. I find it accurate and in a small compact package. Bought a used one from a fellow Gun Nutz for less then $500 and never looked back. Worth the little extra for the accuracy and compactness.

just my 2 cents.....

I bought a Nikkon 800 a couple of years ago. It has very good optics, is 6 power and seems to range accurately to about 500 yards on 1 foot trees. My only complaint is that the narrow field of view sucks compared to some Bushnells I've peaked through but all things considered I'll be keeping the Nikkon. They're about 4 bills...

Bushnell Yardage Pro 800 here.
I range certain easily identifiable features/significant trees/boulders etc and note the ranges and anticpated bullet drop before I ever see anything in the rifle scope.

I'm thinking of getting one, and it'll likely be one of the new Leupolds with the angle compensating feature in it.

Here's one at 1185 yards.

I've shot at it with everything from Enfileds to 45/70's!:D :dancingbanana:
Stright across the river gives use 410 yards, and there is a high bank at 600 that has lots of rocks to shoot at.
All have had the crap shot out of them with iron sighted match rifles, iron sighted BPCR rifles, and a variety of stuff with glass for sights.
I ring the steel regularly with my 6.5WSM hunting rifle at all ranges:dancingbanana:
These have been ranged with GPS, Leica Geovid, the little leica 1200, the Bushnells, and of course my mega milsurp Barr and Stroud that's gooo and accurate for about a zillion yards! ( not very portable however!!)

cat - is that table as steady as you'd like for long range shooting?

Love the range, wish I had something like that near here.
It's not mine, I usually shoot on my belly, or over yon log!:D
it is not too bad, however.
I made a bench for a few years out of pallets, , they were great.
Just had to rebuild every spring!!

Leica LRF 1200 they are sweet and easy to use.

Picked up my LRF 1200 scan yesterday and am sitting here at work playing with it as we speak, er, as we type. Very cool although I'm ranging through windows and the longest I've ranged so far is a truck at 735 metres.

was going to buy a Elite 1500 ACR, but other financial things have popped up so it has been put off until later int he fall :) :runaway:
