Since we are having so much fun withthe 1000 yard moose shot, I thought we could use a rangefinder thread! :D

I have been attempting to buy one for years, but I guess I was waiting for them to drop in price.

This year, I probbaly could have used one. In fact, it may have helped me make the shot of a lifetime!

So, what do you use, what do you like, do you like the binocular range finders or what?

:D

GH, I wish I would have saved my pennies for the Swarovski I saw at Italian Sporting goods. It was around $1000, but has an 8x30 monocular built into it which is of excellent quality. Instead I have a Bushnell Yardage Pro. It is the small one that is supposedly waterproof and floats. It measure out to 800 yards, but the optics are not very good at all. Like I posted, I didn't realise just how innacurate my range estimates were until I packed this rangefinder around. Quite shocking. And I don't mean super long distances either. I've seen what I thought to be 300 yards and it was 500! Or I thought it was 300 and it was only 225. The terrain makes a huge difference...over water, gullies or just a hidden dip in the land can play havoc with your estimation.

rangefinder

I just bought a Lieca 1200 almost new but i have not used it for hunting yet but have played with it and it is clear when at low light and fast at giving yardage when you demand it, I am going on my muley hunt in 9 days i will let you know how it makes out. Most research i have done 90% say get the Lieca 1200 if you want the best.

I have a Bushnell YardagePro 500 and it's a heavy piece of ####, and works on deer out to 300 yards or so, trees out to 400-450

I want a Leica

Not happy with that model when I had it myself. I have the smaller unit now, still not happy with it. considered getting the nikon Buckmaster a while back. Anyone have this model and how is it?

I haev the monarch 800 Nikon, it's OK I haven't played with it all that much, I cary it in my pack, I like to sit still and when I do I use it to range objects at different distances rather than try and range a deer. It's hard to hold it still enough in one hand to range a small object much past 30 yards, but trees hill etc out to 800 is OK.

I wish Santa would put a Leica 10x42 BRF in my sock  Tried a friend's and hot damn are they nice, almost as nice as todbartell's avatars  They claim to be accurate to 1300yrds  Should be...for $2400  :( ...KF

l have a first generation bushnell yardage pro 800......big (compared to what's out there now) and not the quality of glass as what's out there now either, BUT dependable and accurate. (often got readings in access of 800 yards) Have tried it out against a buddies leica and its every bit as good for range finding, although not the same quality ( not the same price either).
If l was buying one now, l would go with the more compact units on the market, but for the amount of time my range finder is used and its importance in the big picture of where l spend my hunting equipment $$$$, l can't justify upgrading to a more expensive model that does the same thing.

The biggest advantages of the leica over the bushnell are that the leica has leds which are easier to read in low light, and the leica uses a narrower beam which reduces the chance of ranging the wrong object.

You guys obviously have not looked at the new Bushnell 1500 Elite... or the new Nikons :? ... these two units are third generation technology and very affordable.
450 bucks or less gets you the best technology in rangefinders now.

I am a rep shooter for a big archery distributor here in Quebec, last winter the store owner asked me to go and try out the new Swarovski laser guide and compare it with the Leica 1200 scan and bushnell pro quest that I already owned here are some results:

Bright sunny winter day (worst condition you can have for a range finder)

Barn:
-Quest=600yards
-Leica=900yards
-Swarov=1400yards

Trees:
-Quest: 550yards
-Leica= 800yards
-Swarov= 1200yards

Deer:
-Quest=475yards
-Leica=675yards
-Swarov=850yards

Coyote: (Golden retreiver  )
-Quest=400yards
-Leica=615yards
-Swarov=775yards

Fox:
-Quest=325yards
-Leica=525yards
-Swarov=675yards

As you see the Leica can range farther then 99% of hunters can shoot so ranging power betwen the Leica and the Swarovski should not be major factor when choosing one over the other. The real difference betwen both units are the optics and the handling, Swarovski as much better optics (8x30 compared to 7x21) and have much greater stability when you want to range far or small targets...

If you want my advice, if you are not used to shooting long range (500y+) get yourself a god Bushnell, if your a good long range shooter and want the best buy for your buck, go with the Leica. If you just want to make yourself a gift that you will love for the rest of your life, go with the Swarovski

The numbers I gave are the ranging capabilities of each unit
Example: The quest will range a dear up to 475 yards, the Leica will range it up to 675 yards and the Swaro. will range the dear up to 850 yards. Each unit is precise to +-1 yard

I went shooting At St-Bruno military range last week-end, I was behind the 600y line and my Swaro. was ranging 603yards, I turnd my self and tryed to range a house down in the field, it gave me 1130 yards, a friend who was just beside me ask me to try it and range the house at 1129yards, he was 1 yard closer to the house then me

I have heard good things about the Swarovski. This morning I ranged and shot and killed a moose at 925 yards I am using a Leica LRF1200. to get the yardage for my 300 Win mags come ups. It would be nice to have a larger monocular in it, and can see that the 8x30 would be an advantage. Maybe next year???
