I want to go shooting over the winter (and justify buying a Norinco 1911), but the Steve Johnson Range that I shoot at, for all intents and purposes is closed over the winter.

I'm not a big fan of the Shooting Edge, since [edit] it's quite expensive and far, [/edit] and they only let members of the Calgary Highlanders shoot there for free (none of the other Reservists get that privalige).

The Calgary Rifle and Pistol Club seems like my next best option, but I've never been there.

Does anyone have any advise as to where I can go?

I am not a fan either, but why would you hold it against them, just because TSE lets anyone else shoot for free? That is their privilege to give. They are also a business so one would expect most to pay for the privilege.

I don't mind paying to shoot somewhere, although I would like to be economical about it. The Edge is quite expensive to shoot at as well.

I suppose it's also the old "boy's club" type mentality; I'm from a differant club than the types who can shoot at the Edge for free; hence it's a factor that's discouraging for me.

Reading my first post, I can see it was a bit misleading; edited ;)

Well..if the TSE is too far........Okotoks is out. I shoot at TSE for the access and 'indoorishness' and access to free use of range guns.

It's pricey if you never go, but the membership isn't that bad if you shoot twice a week like I do most of the time. Even if you go twice a month, it works out to what.....$30 bucks a month or so? My phone bill these days is triple that per month or 3 meals at a fast food place per month or ONE night at the movie theater!!! When most basic Mc.WalMart jobs pay $10 per hour, and ammo is .15-.20 a shot.......feels weird to hear conistent grumbling about $30 per month for an indoor range with many amenities. JM2C. :)

I also think that TSE is quite expensive, but it is also far from being an old "boys club" and I think that it is far from being a club of any kind. TSE is a business and part of their business is running a shooting range. Maybe my definition of club is all out of wak? The fact that as a business they allow certain people to shoot for free is great! To TSE Good on ya!:D

Members of the Calgary Highlanders do NOT shoot for free...They are discounted on their day passes Mon -Fri.

TSE is not expensive. If you figure the benefits you get having a local indoor range to use 350+ days a year, it is cheap.
I have a family membership in Olds. It is a great range as well, but to get there I have to drive over an hour each way, use $20 or more worth of gas each time, have to plan to go instead of just deciding to go anytime I want to kill a few hours, can't shoot past sundown etc. You get the idea. Convenience has it's price but I don't think it's unreasonable.

I live in Huntington Hills; so the SJR was my range of choice.

I work in the industrial area by Deerfoot Mall too, so some weekends, I'd go shooting in the morning and bank some hours in the afternoon. At $150 a year for membership, I worked it out to about $5 an outing this year, going 2-4 times a week in the summer and every weekend until it started snowing.

I also don't like being couped up indoors - I work in a cubicle and at a job very similiar to Peter Gibbons in Office Space.

I've heard good things about the Airdrie range too, anyone else been there?

While I don't have to wear an evening gown to cover what the good Lord blessed me with, a mini skirt may land me in jail. Can I compromise with something just above the knee. :D

That could work...just make sure it has a high slit up on the side....Don't forget ur tall black boots as well~

How about the local pub? You can cry into your beer for a mere $6 a pint.

But at least you won't freeze to death. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't all the outdoor ranges in Calgary shutdown if it's below -5 or something? Isn't going to be that warm for awhile.

Nope; at least three of the ranges that I belong to (C&DTSA, MVMA and APSA) are open year round regardless of weather. Mind you, you won't see me out there when it's -30 C ;)
