Hey guys,

I'm getting my first restricted firearm so I need to join a range. I live in the Kelowna area and was wondering which range to choose. I heard Kelowna rod and gun is always super busy, Has anyone ever been to the range up in the Joe rich area. Anyways any feed back would be great. Thanks Mark

I moved away a year ago, but kelowna rod probably shouldnt be your first choice. It was nice to have a range so close, but If I hadnt got a free membership I would never have joined. Lots of fudds.

Joe rich is awesome, never anybody there, and if there is somebody its probably Snipz and his friends haha.

Oceola in winfield was the range I visited most, its a bit of a junk yard but theres a lot of freedom, its usually pretty dead and nobody is going to get butt hurt if your shooting silhouette targets or set gongs up at the 200yard mark.

Show me in the law where it is required. It is CFO policy, it is NOT LAW.
If you play hardball with them, you can get an LTATT w/o a membership. Get their refusal in writing and go from there.

The Kelowna fish and game is not a bad club at all but it is expensive, even a guest pass is expensive  I went to the Joe Rich range last weekend, its bit of a drive but not bad at all. I really like the fact that it has a 300 yard range and you can shoot your pistols on all the ranges except the 300 yard range. I don`t know if you can shoot steel at the Joe Rich range hope fully someone here will know. Ive never been to the one in Winfield so I know nothing about it.

ESQ ir sight you dont really need a range its only illigal if you get caught :p

Nothing illegal and nothing to do with being caught. You can get an LTATT w/o range membership as it is only a CFO policy dreamt up by a power hungry bureaucrat.

Again, get the refusal to issue the LTATT in writing with the reason being that you don't have a club membership, then call your lawyer.

They are using the club membership as proof of target practice. But many use ranges on day passes. If you don't want to join a range, don't. Just put that money towards fighting those CFO #######s.

WoW!
Can some one please post address of the Joe Rich range as that would be perfect for me to vist when I am at my cabin in Big White. Way better than driving all the way into to just to shoot my restricteds.

Hey...Joe Rich is an awesome range! I dont know the exact address but u can buy a membership at Grouse River Outfitters in Kelowna and they can provide all the info u need. It only costs $40/year and $5 day passes.Compare that to $100+/year and $15 day passes at the Kelowna range. Only paper targets are allowed and one drawback is no shotguns are allowed(not sure why). Its never crowded there. Ive been a member for about 3 years and have only seen other people there a few times!

Thanks for all the feed back. I think I will be going to Joe Rich. The K-town rod and gun is $130.00 membership plus $20.00 for the gate key, so $150.00 versus $40.00. Thanks again guys. Mark

Its on HWY 33. About 8KM past the Joe Rich fire hall on your left. There is a sign at the entrance but its hard to see until your right at the turnoff.

Gate key is a one time fee and your annual membership includes membership in the bcwf Wand if you ever want to try a shooting sport such as clays or Ipsc kfgc has both

Bumping this cause I'll be in Kelowna for a couple months for school. I'm used to shooting at our nice quiet range in Pemberton so I'd like something similar. Seems the Joe Rich range is the way to go? I can't quite justify spending $150 for 2 months...

summerland is cheap family for like 80 a year, no friend drop in fees, a long range and short range. always fairly quiet, never had an issue, and always fun. a little drive is worth it

If you don't mind tripping on hundreds of 7.62X39 & 7.62X25 shell casings & shot up radios & tin cans even saw a shot up computer left on the range one visit. Thanks to a few irresponsible inconsiderate morons the range is on the verge of being SHUT DOWN by the BCCFO .

Yeah there is some idiots that do go there.
It is now cleaned up and there is no shells or computer crap lying around.

I've been in Kelowna for almost 10 years now and I had no idea there was a range in Joe Rich...

Anyway, the KDFGC is a nice facility, especially since it's right in town but:
a) It's expensive... think about $100+/year now, if I'm not mistaken.
b) LOTS of Fudds
c) You can't take in guests unless you're rich (It's like $20/guest and that makes it really hard to get new shooters out)

Oceola is pretty good. There is no shelter so you'll be shooting in the rain if you go on a crappy day but it's CHEAP and usually deserted.

If you're living in Kelowna I would say that the Joe Rich range and Oceola are probably the same distance away if JR is 8K past the fire hall. The one bennefit I can possibly see to Oceola is that it's more than likely at a lower altitude so you'll be shooting longer in the fall and starting earlier in the spring if you don't like shooting in the snow.

YMMV

I like the way you think sir.
