Well in the last 3 years myself and my family have found 26 deer shot and left because they were the wrong species or not big enough when it comes to antler size. (some were likely because of bad shots and no tracking) Most nights on the drive home after legal last light we pass hunters just going out and here plenty of gunshots well after (with a good scope you could probably see too shoot but legally it's suppose to be done for the day) Last year I found a 5x5 that scored 154 with heavy chocolate antlers that someone shot in the neck when it was running you could see the impact and slide DRT in the snow the deer was left due to the size wasn't good enough (all I can assume as it was in the middle of a field with no trees) This year was a mule deer that would of went (guessing) 160 ish but the one side didn't fork so it would of looked like a typical whitetail (a big one I might add) So I am guessing he was a victom of shoot first ask questions later. the third was just off a trail we just missed this one and I wish I could of caught them. A nice 4 point whitetail was shot in the head with in spitting distance of the trail (thinking shot out of the vehicle) it was DRT and left to rot we got out to look at it and it wasn't even stiff yet. small bucks of both types of deer make up the rest of the 26 we found. What really broke my back this year was when I walked 2 miles cross country to this spot that is on hunting on foot with written premission only. While I got set up and after about 30 mins a truck came over the hill driving through small trees and brush in an old beater. as soon as he seen me he took off but because of the brush I never got a look at the plate.

This all leads up to an event that happened this morning at the local diner I was having breakfast and the table behind me was comenting on how they havent seen any shooters yet this year and his buddy said yeah I have had to leave a few i got cause they were too small and one cause he didn't have one side of his antlers. (how the hell do you not know what it is before you pull the trigger) Then they went on to give there ideas on why theres no big ones this is when I stood up looked at them and said " The reason there are no big ones is because f***heads like yourself shoot and leave deer if you all leave the middle sized bucks to rot what is suppose to get big as well as all the genes (possible big deer) your are taking out cause they are not breeding" They looked at me with big eyes and then I left.

the area around my house has always produced big bucks and is a hotspot for people that just want the antlers they have no interest in the meat or the sport I call people like this killers not hunters. I shutter to think how many deer have been shot and left that my self or hunting party have not come across. This problem has esculated due to the fact about 5 years ago they took our game warden away and since then I have seen one once.

what ever happened to when you pull the trigger you are saying that is the deer I want not I would like a closer look

I think these people have finally done a number in my area as in the 10 days are group never seen a "trophy buck" ( lucky we hunt for the comrodery, meat and the expieriences during the hung so we got our animals) at all and didn't talk to one person who had. Maybe that will teach these people a lesson but I doubt it they will likely just move to another area :(

Does stuff like this happen in your area at all? It makes me ashamed to be a hunter and be associated with people like this.

Rant over

I have called and let the proper authorites know and they are doing what they can with the manpower they have :( This is the first year since the game warden was taken away that I ran into one he told me the area he has to patroll, he would be lucky to do it all in a season if he did a new area each day.

I was worked up when I typed this I will correct spelling and grammer later

This does NOT happen in our camp. Our rule is if you shoot it you tag it....I would be exremely pissed and offended, to learn that this was someone's hunting ethics.

We had one hunter a few years back suggest it, and he was not invited back.

west central saskatchewan lot of locals hunt the area as well as alot from bc and alberta Not saying any group is responsible thats just the hunters we see when were out.

Jayph, I don't blame you for being upset. Unfortunately, there are people out there with flawed ethics. When they pick up a gun in the city, people get murdered. In the country they are simply murdering animals. Nothing about them makes them hunters. They are poachers and murders that give our sport a bad name. I feel your frustrations.

Three days in the field this year in South Central Sask and I never saw a CO. I'd been told that they'd been out in force during the week, even airborne, but not a one to be found on the Saturdays. This was southeast of Regina and also south of the Avonlea area.

Three days in the field last year, same area SE of Regina and I saw one.

This season I found two does laying in the bush within 20ft of the field and a small buck in the corn field left to rot. The difference with my situation is I know who shot them so I reported it to the MNR along with all the details of how, when and where to catch him the following day. He was also using a rifle and our area is shotgun only along with shooting from a motorized vechicle. Well when the Co did show up 2 1/2 weeks later for his investagation he was asking me questions about it like I shot the deer. I was so disgusted by the whole incident that I feel it is a complete waste of time to even phone the MNR and may have to use alternate methods to get the attention of the Co in the future. As I now have documented his incompetance maybe a nice letter full of pics sent to the local news paper of the slaughter of these beautifull deer and that the MNR did nothing would get a more sudden response from him in the future. It is saddening to see that this type of event happens else where.

When I was growing up (back East) and my father was teaching me about hunting, he always said that we have responsibilities as hunters (above and beyond the legal ones).

He always said that the animal is giving up its life for us and we have the responsibility to make sure that its death is as quick and painless as possible and to make sure that we don't waste anything. This is something that I am now teaching to my son.

My father always was, and I remain to this day, adamantly opposed to trophy hunting for the antlers alone. In my opinion, if you are taking the meat and happen to get a nice rack of antlers, well all the more power to you, but I think it's disgusting to hunt and kill an animal for a set of antlers alone and then leave the meat.

As for these folks that shoot whatever they see without bothering to identify it first.......well, it's that type of disregard that brings a lot of negative press down on hunting. I have absolutely no sympathy for them and their complaints of a lack of bucks!

Just my $0.02......we now return you to your regularly scheduled postings.

Jayph...after your first post, i was going to ask if you are in Sask.....and sure enough you are, people here hunt like they drive...horribly!! I quite often run into shot deer, unclaimed or the antlers missing. It's the same mentality that causes them to not leave their vehicles or quads when hunting, I don't get it!

WOW! I am astounded that you found that many dead deer! I would be righteously pissed also! I know there are some unethical people in my area, but they are few & far between. IMHO the lack of game wardens is part of the problem. In my area I have hunted & fished for the last 25+ years & I have only seen a warden once. I believe if people knew there was a good chance that they would be held accountable for their actions, there would be less abuse. Imagine what crime would be like if we suddenly reduced the # of police on the streets?

I was in B.C for awhile in the princeton area and we used ti hunt up in the cattle ranges... The natives and probly a few others but i do no for a fact the natives had a tendancy to shoot out a herd of mulys and when they walked up to them if they were gut shot or fell in a spot that took work to get them they just left them there to rot like garbage!! Very saddening the way people dont care! This is the reason that most of us ethical hunters face such scrutiny from alot of land owners and animal activists... Sometimes you cannot blame them for there views!

While I haven't seen what you have seen, I have seen enough.

I hunted South east Sask this season and will be on into the winter.
I have seen truckloads of hunters driving through fields thye weren't allowed to be in. I have seen at least 10 guys looking in my direction with their rifle scope instead of binoculars. I have met 3 people in 3 days who wounded and lost their animals.

I was driving home about an hour after last light with a deer in the truck. Thought for sure i would be stopped as the road I was travelling was known for deer hunting. Nope.

I have seen one CO since being here, I wasn't overly impressed with his ignorance and even this guy wasn't in the woods, I met him at a gas station.

I have been in some beautiful places here in Sask, and wildlife abound...
If the CO's aren't gonna protect it, start yourselves.

I'm not sure what type of programs other province have, but the "Report a poacher" program in Alberta seems to work pretty good. I've read about a lot of convictions because of it. Good point sealhunter about protecting our wildlife.

Here's some of your problem right here Jayph.I'm embarrased that these guys are from B.C.A bonus though they give their names and say they live in White Rock B.C. in part 3 of this video,so if anyone of you Sask. guys want to call your local game warden.I can't believe they're dumb enough to post this.

Not sure what is going on there. They shot a mulie doe that the had a tag for but they seem to think it is a white tail? Did they leave it? Or tag it with a white tail tag?

You know, after totalling one truck, and damaging a second since March '08 due to animal strikes, I don't have a problem with the fella's that are too lazy to actually hunt. It's more of a "harvest" mentality. It's not a "hunting" mindset. The reason you see so much of it here is because we have the most roads and field access trails in Canada. I have my own property, and I don't permit drive thru slaying on my land, but I've got no issue if a group wants to call ahead, and arrange a drive (push bush) to clear some of the deer off my property.
And if you think the drivers in Saskatchewan are terrible, try driving anywhere near Edmonton or near the power stations and coal mines around Wabaman lake.;)

After 30 some years of hunting whitetails in Sask.I have nothing but good to say about the hunters here. There has been the odd bit of trouble but very rare, great place to live and hunt.

I agree this was my fathers 28th year and my 12th hunting sask. Up untill 5 years ago there was the odd little thing like you say but as soon as they took the game warden away there has been a steady decline in ethics. People that would never break the law in the past are now doing it as there is no threat of being caught and punished. I am glad your area is still a great place to hunt :)

We have a lack of wardens too, and we are seeing a lot of road hunters. I know of 2 trucks within 10 miles that got shot this year. The owners had their rifle go off inside their own trucks.
