RAS alternative

I'm looking to mount a surfire flashlight on my ar15, along with a vertical grip below, soon to be replaced with a launcher. However, I don't have the cash for a full RIS/RAS system. Is there a cheaper alternative handgaurd with 4 picatinny rails, or is two the best I am going to get?

This is bushmasters for 179 USD per set...

Is there something similar in Canada?

Also, as a bit of a follow-up question, how effective would mounting a red dot, or EO Tech type sight between the front of my A2 handle, and behind the front iron sight. Would alignment be a problem? Is this common, or plain stupid?

Got the idea from a cgnner in the photo gallery...

His looks pretty good, and seems like it would be effective enough. (the camo ar)

There are a lot of RAS alternatives, surefire M73 is one of them, Samson manufacturing also came up with the MRFS-DI not too long ago.

You should not have any alignment problem mounting a RDS between the carrying handle and the front sight as long as you use a quality "scout" mount (i.e. not some cheap airsoft knock-offs). If you look closer to the picture, that's what being used; the "scout" mount is attached to the carrying handle. The only draw back is the rifle becomes considerably front heavy. I have shot with a similar setup and do not like it.

I've got the surefire on one of my rifles. It is a reasonably priced good solid rail system.
It would not be a big deal mounting a red dot on the top of the handguard rails, but do not expect it to maintain a perfect zero. It would be good enough for most social engagements though.

If you're looking to do this as cheaply as possible then you could buy some short sections of picatinny/weaver rail and bolt them to the handguards. I have a short rail from advanced armament corp. that is the perfect length for a single point vertical grip. You could then use a second one and drill it into the handguards at the two or 10 o'clock positions for a flashlight. As for the eotech a goosemount will work fine (I have one from PRI) although good ones are around a hundred bucks. For everything that you plan on using this for you might just be better off looking for a used free float rail. It will cost a little more, but worth it in the long run. BBB had a daniel defense carbine unit awhile back for only $200 in the exhchange forum.

I lloked at the RIS snap in hand gaurds for work and the m203 knoked off anything mounted on the top unless you reefed on the thumb screws it seems that the recoil jostles the barrel nut and vibrated the handguard ring & spring whitch viberates the handguards and nanything mounted on them. I immagine a free floated system would work ok but I havn't been able to try it yet.

I talked to Mr. Wolverine, and he's gonna hook me up. Since I'm doing an overhaul on my stock m15a2, I figured that I'd do the whole shebang in one shot. He's gonna swap with an a4 upper reciever, install a 6 pos. stock, and use a Daniel Defence (which he imports) handguard. Then its off to Skullboy for some Cadpat AR furniture... closely followed by a Tango down grip with a surefire tac light and OTAL laser sight/pressure pad and an Aimpoint ML2. Yeah baby.

DD handgaurd...
