Hi all
I'm looking for a small, lightweight .22 to carry on my back for small game while deer hunting. Pricewise, I have narrowed it down to either the Savage Rascal or the Chiappa Badger. (22 LR). I was wondering if anyone could offer advice or opinions on either rifle?
Many thanks!

ive got them both.
i carry the badger on my quad when im out for plinking.
super small and light.
the rascal is just a normal rifle that is small for kids.
if i had to choose which one to take on a hike?
id take the little badger - just because it folds in half and is uber light and keep in mind its normal sized where whenever ive shot my kids Rascal ive it feels like a toy because the length of pull is so short.
for comfort and weight and pack-ability id say little badger.
also the bager had rails and irons so you can put a red dot or a small scope on it if ya want - the rascal youd have to drill and tap it and add on a rail.

ive got a old scope on mine on a quick release base so i can pop it on and off if i want, then i have a plastic folding forgrip on it to make it a little more comfy to hold, then i put a hammer spur on it so i can get past the scope easy like.

Thanks for the reply, Wayup. I didn't consider the LOP of the Badger vs the Rascal. How is it for reloading? Easy to pick out the spent shell? The Rascal appealed to me because it's a bolt action, but if the Badger is easy and quick to empty and reload, maybe I will go with that.....

Other options would be the take-downs from Browning (SA20, quite pricey though...) or Norinco (JW-20) both weighing in at about 5 lbs. Very handy little semis IMO and no plastic on them at all!

There is also the little Crickett that has an adult stock option, it's short and light as well. Accurate little rifle with the right ammo. One of the kids (and sometimes myself) is using it.

the lil badger lifts the spent shell out of the barrel a couple of millimeters when you crack the gun open, kinda like those old timey shotguns.
so its kinda half out and easy to grab and toss.
i find reloading it easy, takes a second to do, no longer then reloading a bolt action.

Don't have the Rascal, primarily because I tried shouldering it at a gun shop and... Well... It's for little people. Pretty awkward.

I've run hundreds of rounds through my Badger since I picked it up over a year ago, and it was hell on the gophers last year, because it was easy to throw onto the dash of the gator while I was toodling around my uncle's place helping him with chores. Considering I only used it for quick "opportunity" shots, still managed to get a few dozen with it. I found it a little tough to be accurate past 25 yards or so, but that's the shooter, not the rifle.

Extraction was pretty easy. The extractor pulls out the shell enough that a quick flick with your thumbnail completes the job. I got pretty quick about reloading after a while. I did cover the wire stock with cloth cammo tape, because I was actually using it for plinking in Feb. while it was still cold out, and was not fond of the way the metal wanted to freeze to my cheek. I put rail covers around the bottom 3/4's of the pic rail fore end and wrapped the whole thing in more cloth tape, which gives it a nicer grip on the fore end.

This year's addition to the collection for easy to pack .22s (well, one of this year's additions, I seem to be developing a minor collection) it the Marlin Papoose. Semi auto, easy to scope, assembles quickly, and I'm surprised at how easy to point and accurate it is. Maintains zero between barrel installs. And a base one goes for about $150-$180 depending on where you get it and whether or not it's on sale.

Haven't taken it to the gopher patch yet, but I've been having a gas plinking with it.
