We always had a team of barn cats on the big farm (commercial chicken), rarely saw a rat that was alive. Mice seemed to breed faster than the cats could kill though. Lighting burn piles was always interesting too, the field mice pouring out and then running around stomping them. Kids don't have the simple, and in retrospect somewhat disturbed, pleasures these days we considered normal.
When I was a kid, my dad had a flashlight duct taped to his Cooey 600, called it the "Midnight Special". Killed a lot of barn rats with that gun loaded with CB Longs.
I used to go to the local garbage dump and blast rats. Great fun!!!!!
Unfortunately the dump has been closed now.
I have been watching a lot of rat Hunting on YouTube. Can't believe how satisfying they are to watch.
