Rat Hunting

Every spring and fall I have a blast clearing the rats out in the barn, It's almost like a carnival gallery shooting game.

The tool of choice is my Henry compact lever action shooting 22 CB shorts.

Best one I heard was about some guys going into a Sask. grain elevator, lights out and listening for the pitter patter of little feet. Lights on and blast away.;) Alberta is rat free.

Grizz

I used to go to the local garbage dump and blast rats. Great fun!!!!!
Unfortunately the dump has been closed now.

There are almost no more traditional grain elevators in Saskatchewan, they have all been torn down or replaced with concrete and steel terminals with no rat habitat. Garbage dumps are pretty much gone too. However, rats are still doing OK in other ways. And Alberta hasn't been rat free for about twenty years. I have sold Alberta a lot of rat poison for their control program, which isn't completely effective. Shooting rats is the most fun pest control method ever! Not completely effective either, but beats poison in so many ways!

The turkey from Eco-Lab that inspects at my work is out of alberta and he swears up and down the rats stop at the border. I find that so amazing. My uncle lives in alberta and claims there are no mosquitos there either.

We get rats out at the chicken coop. Not a lot of them, but its a long run for the rats, so hitting them with a .410 while they try to make a break for it is fun as hell. I only get a few year, but the cats seem to drag one in monthly

We always had a team of barn cats on the big farm (commercial chicken), rarely saw a rat that was alive. Mice seemed to breed faster than the cats could kill though. Lighting burn piles was always interesting too, the field mice pouring out and then running around stomping them. Kids don't have the simple, and in retrospect somewhat disturbed, pleasures these days we considered normal.

We did that same thing when we were kids Ardent, we used hockey sticks...

We were working for a Hutterite colony knocking down an old wooden elevator, we had the base work done and the whole colony (including the women which is unusual) came out to watch us push it over and kill the rats that came out of it. They had a great time chasing those rats around killing them with sticks

We used to send our ferret under one side of the corn crib and wait at the other with our .22,s and shotguns. That was a blast

Ther used to be this old guy in Massett that would go to the dock and bet the new deckhand and skippers he can shoot nickel out of the air
One day wen I was working on tying up some fishing gear I ask wear did you Learned to shoot like that his reply at the local dump shooting rats and mice then he laugh and said I was smart not to ever bet money against him and I said I know a pool shark wen I see one
