I'm not backing anyone's VERSION of history.

I am concerned only with what happened.

What ACTUALLY happened, not someone's Hollywood dream about what happened.

Do some reading of history, find out the events, then put things into chronological order.

THAT's what HAPPENED.

How you rationalise it, what you make of it, is your prerogative.

But DO at least TRY to stick to the facts.

I think what Smellie is saying don't generalize all SS. Most SS men were just elite combat soldiers and not affiliated with the camps or war crimes. The foreign SS units not so much elite, but volunteers lured to the SS ranks to fight the Bolshevik threat.
 
The Victors write history as they wish it to have been, this has always been true.
Some people are haters- they just love to hate. They jump on what ever bandwagon is currently popular - and go into "hate mode".

You are wrong on this. The Waffen SS was integrated into the concentration camp system, specifically the SS TV which became a full Waffen SS division. Waffen SS members were rotated in and out of death camps. They were politically indoctrinated thugs and anyone who tries rehabilitate their obscene history, has my contempt.

I originally read this thread because I enjoyed the Desert Rats but to see someone post gratuitous praise on the SS was a little much.
 
I will not post praise nor condone anyone's acts. Regardless of the flag that you wear on your shoulder, regardless of the sub unit or division of the armed forces in which you are employed, the fact that you stood up and volunteered to be an instrument of war deserves respect.

Now when it comes to the Rat Patrol discussion... I loved that show when I was a kid! Made me want to go blasting through the desert at mach chicken atop a jeep clinging on to a .50!
 
I wanted a .50 that would fire forever without a belt!

Only ones I have seen which are able to fire want $9, 8 times a second: a tad over $4300 a minute.

Too bad.

No, you are wrong. The Waffen SS were not "rotated" in and out of concentration camps. They were a seperate entity from the SS DEATH SQUADS and the like. Not that the Waffen SS were angels but they were soldiers not political thugs and mass murderers.
