Hello Gents,

I need some help deciding on which rate of twist to get. I've decided to get a Savage Model 12 VLP DBM in .22-250. It comes in either a 1 in 9" or 1 in 12" twist. I will mainly be shooting lighter bullets in the 40-55 gr. range. Any input would be appreciated.

My .223 Tikka is 1-8", and launches the 55gr just fine. 40gr worked okay, but not as accurate at 55 in my rifle anyway.

My advice would be to get the faster twist. You can still shoot lighter bullets, but can't shoot heavier than 55gr (usually) with a 1-12" with any degree of accuracy.

In regards to the twist rate for .223 cal.; the faster the rate, the heavier and longer the bullet that can be stabilized. The 1 in 7" twist on a Colt A2 Sporter will stabilize a bullet up to 80 grains.

Conversely, I find bullets that deviate in either direction from 140 grains in the 6.5x55 round, fired from an M96, tend to sacrifice accuracy.

If you will not want to use anything heavier than 55gr., then the 1-12 is the better choice. If you will want to try some of the heavier bullets for longer range shooting, then the 1-9 will be the choice.
