I'm hunting whitetails in east-central Saskatchewan (around Canora, Kamsack, Yorkton). This is my first year to hunt with a muzzleloader so I've never been out this early before. When I hunt in late November/early December I usually have good luck with rattling and grunting. Can anyone offer some info on rattling this early in the year? I was out last week and there was very little sign (rubs and scrapes) so I don't want to spook them.

Thanks for any advice! :)

IMHO, a little calling and rattling is better than alot... I shot a 7pt buck last year... He responded to 6 or 8 short, soft grunts... I didn't know he was there till he came sneaking in...

Cheers

Yeah, they're extra cautious when you call them so it's often difficult to even see them. I've rarely had them come charging in looking for a fight and I've probably called more in than I've actually seen. ;) Sometimes it's better to just sit quietly and wait for them...that's why I'm curious about calling this early. Maybe I should just choose a "gamey" area and sit still.

Lightly brush the tips of the antlers , its a bit higher pitch, and sounds like 2 young bucks playing. Fawn distress call may also help.
Early on in the season hunt early morning, and late evening. Stay down wind of hot areas and your set. :)

if there is no sign of a rut on..(scraps or rubs found in your scouting) i would stick to fawn calls.....
but then again..some one has to go into heat first

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going out again late next week....I was hunting a new area last week and found a good looking place to stump sit. I'll try a bit of calling but not too much. Cheers! :)
