So you have to drill holes in the receiver, eh?
No longer interested.

I think designing something that would be sturdy with repeatable zero, and NOT drilling into the receiver would be nearly an impossible task. The problem with current mounts has been the somewhat non-repeatable zero - especially for a conventional scope. I think drilling the receiver will be a non-issue for a good setup that works.

The exception may be the aluminum forearm mount, however it is only suited to red dots and perhaps a true scout scope. These mounts are relatively recent and it will be interesting to see how well these hold zero in the long term with frequent on/off during the cleaning procedure.

I side plate that would use some of the existing hole (or even a tab that goes under to use the pistol grip screw) would have been nice.

If you need to drill and tap the receiver, wouldn't it just be easier to get unversal plate without screw holes... and have your local gunsmith drill/tap the two at the same time?

I hear you, I'm just not keen on making permanent alterations to the receiver that don't trust others to make and would probably screw up myself.

The ideal solution would probably involve something like Kasat's custom mount but made to "snug" into the groove in the receiver and machined out of cast iron to avoid flexing. I'll admit having access to a foundry is a limiting factor. Those are my thoughts, but I expect there are other problems with this that I haven't considered.

I also only have one 58 and don't want to bugger it up. Chances are that I'd lose the fear if I had more than one and wanted to really "build it up" as it were.

I know that there are those who are nervous about drilling their reciever and for them I have a few points:

1. There is no tapping necessary only the drilling of 3 or 4 holes.

2. We have an agreement with a smith who will mount these up for people who are afraid to take it on themselves or dont' have access to a good smith. Don't worry we have you covered. :D

3. The pistol grip screw is only one mounting point and it depends on wrapping the mount around the reciever. That is just too bulky, too much extra weight, and too unstable for what we have in mind.

4. The only pin that exists in the reciever is in a poor position, and would put pressure on the reciever walls compressing them together. It would also have to be removed to service the trigger group. So its a non starter.

5. This mount is designed to be combat ready, competition ready, hunting ready and generally people ready. I want the user to be able to drop their rifle while running, pick it up and hit their target. This isn't some made in my garage on my princess auto mill, learned on the internet how to machine part. The equipment that is used to make it is worth about twice what the average Canadian makes a year. The designers, development team and production staff are comprised of highly skilled persons who have careers invested in this sort of thing. I want users to have the optic fail before this mount.

Once mounted it is best to view it as just another part of your rifle.

A'ight then. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and wait for it to be finished before passing judgment.

If it's as awesome as you say it is, and the price point is right, I'll buy one.

While we are making wishes... can it be made so that it doesn't sit 2" above the rear cover?...

And why not shoot for the moon... how about a simple clamp cheek rest to go on the folding stock!

On my mockup the scope almost sits right on the rear sight its so close, that said it will all depend on what scope/mount you chose. :sniper:

And we have much better stock options then the factory folder that are waiting to go to the coaters right now. :D

Not to drift off topic, but G37, I see your liquidating all your good East Bloc hardware.:(
You won't be able to play with all the neat new stuff Supra and crew are making.:sniper:

So we are just finishing negotiating dealer status on the forums right now. Once that is done stuff will go up for sale.

Here is how its gonna look for pricing: $125 for the rail with shell deflector and mounting hardware.

For right now we cannot offer the optics with the rail. The cost of the optic right now is just too much to be worth our while, its better if the consumer buys it themselves from known retailers for now.

The more I read, the more I like! I especially like the price! I may take two!
I have a smith just up the road who I am sure can drill me 4 holes at reasonable cost.

Just wondering how much of the serial number it covers, if any?

I'm keeping the CZ858 now (pulled the post) I wanted a Restricted-58 with Folding Stock for my next project (hint: super shorty using the barrel blank in my avatar) but, in the long run I think it'll be cheaper and more fun to make a Non-Restricted, Stainless 858 :) It just sucks that the blank can only make 1 barrel (instead of 2 if I were doing the restricted version)

I'm keeping my eyes on this thread as it sounds fantastic.

I'm interested to see how this turns out. The russian optics sidemount setup has always interested me.

Suprathepeg, maybe I missed it, but did you have any pics of what the side mount with deflector will look like?

Edit - I have an rpg-7 scope that is missing its rail... will the new mount rail be compatable?:p;)

Pics should be coming before sunday and we should be ready to take orders then.

Sorry wally I don't know about the RPG-7 scope. You could send one here and I could try it for you and send it back or you could measure the dovetail specs and I could tell you.
