Thoughts, opinions, personal experiences?

Looking for something to mount on my Remington 700 .308.

Primarily used for hunting, but also targets out to max 600 yards, so considering low-medium variable power range (1.x/2x-8x-12x max) prefer simple reticle designs (like the G4 BDC on the Vortex)

Glass clarity, light transmission (low light performance) are primary concerns.

Trying to keep the budget under $1500

A hair over your budget ($1650 before taxes) but I recently got a Nightforce SHV 4-14x50 F1 Mil-R and it's great. The reticle is much better than the mil-dot I was used to but not at all cluttered. Glass is great. I didn't really think an illuminated reticle was something I would use but I've found it really useful against darker targets or targets in the shade, etc. I have it on my Rem 700 .308 and routinely take it out to almost 900 yards and have gone past 1000 at a match. So far my only gripe is the capped windage knob but that's not a deal breaker (I only use it for spin drift past 600 or so)

Neither of those suggestions offer the low (1.x/2x) starting magnification i specified i was looking for.

That's right.

The Meostar R1 in 1-4x22 or 1.5-6x42 or the R2 in 1-6x24 or 2-12x50 would be great choices.
