The .575 minie's I cast from the Lee mold are working very well. I'd like to try RB also. The closest size would be a .562 ball and I'd use a .010 patch which would give me a .582 for the .577 bore. I know the rifling is shallow but has anyone given this a try? Less lead to use but a higher charge could be used. Oh it's a P53 3 Band. Thanks

Yeah, it's certainly slow. My GPR has a 1in60 or 66 I forget which. It has deep groves but shoots the .54 minies very well. Lead is hard to come by cheaply so I figure RB will conserve my supply a bit.

the minis should weigh about the same as a round ball

to keep my alloy i have a wood box thats divided into 4 sections 1ft long each 3 are filled with rubber mulch and 1 is filled with gravel ive shot everything into it including x54r light steel ball it stop them then later you can retrive the bullet and reuse the alloy

Lee doesn't say what the balls weigh but the .54 is 320 to the minie's 415. Sounds like a good recovery system you've got.

1 in 78" is about a round ball twist for a .58

The 6" 6" (78") twist was standard for the Enfield Pattern 1853 Rifle Musket and the Pattern 1856 Short Rifle which used a 530 grain RN cylindrical bullet. The pattern 1853 and 1858 Artillery Carbines and the Pattern 1856 Cavalry Carbine all with 78" twist used a 530 grain bullet same as the rifles.

that may be but its bang on for round ball of that cal that may be why the 3 groove conversion snider shoot better with round balls
